My new 400ex leaves a gas trail when I ride a wheelie or any time the front is up 3/4 the way. I have asked the dealer if this is normal, he said yes, if I adjust the float down I could lose power when I need it. I have other 4-wheelers and none of them do it, so how can it be normal. Is it the type of carb. or what?

any dirt bike or quad will do this it is normal
its just an overflow tube from the carb.
This is why quads are hard on gas when hill climbing all day or pulling wheelies and why u shut the gas off when tiping them back

Yep, it's normal. Any bike with a properly setup carb will do this. Do not lower the float level, it will throw your mixture lean and possibly burn up stuff that you don't want burnt.

Mixture? I thought 400ex's were 4 stroke. Couldn't the same thing happen baceause of the overflow hoses the gas tank has on it, i'm not sure about the new Hondas but the older ones had an overflow hose hooked up to the tank so when it got too much pressure built up or there was too much gas in the tank it leaked out through the hose down by the bottom of the engine. ( I'm not talking about the one on top of the gas cap that goes through the front of the frame) Oh yeah, my Bayou 220 does the same thing when it gets tipped back too.

Its normal for Keihin carbs to do this, which the 400EX uses. The benefit is that the fuel stays constantly flowing. Yes my 400EX does it too.

We're talking fuel/air mixture, not fuel/oil mixture. And yes, the float level will affect fuel/air mixture.

The fuel comes out of the carburetor overflow hose, there is no gas tank overflow except the one on the gascap.

Hey, guys thanks for answering my question. My other ride is a warrior and it never flows gas on a wheelie. Should it? Or is it the kind of carb. like you said?

Hey 86atc250r, those are some cool pics! I jump my 400ex pretty high also. Have you done anything to the suspension on the 400 yet or are those stoke jumps? Is it very crowded over easter weekened at little sahara, or do most of the people go to the snake weekend?
