I don't know if i want a 400ex or not. I do all trail riding so i would like something with reverse. i currently have a 250x which is a good trail bike, but i need more power. so what quad should i buy? i would be interested to know how a 400ex does trail riding? i am talking mud, logs, and really deep water? I like to go through water alot so i kinda wanna know how they do in water excursions? Thanks for any help!

I think that for all around trail riding the 400EX would be pretty good. It wouldnt handle quite as wellas your 250X of course, but have more power. Probably not the greatest water machine though beings its 2wd. If you want something to go thought water why not get a 4wd utility quad? And then maybe just put some accessories on the 250X to make it more powerful, like a pipe, cam, big bore kit, etc.

I can't think of any reason a 400ex wouldn't go anywhere a 250x can go, but I bet there is a few places a 400ex will go that a 250x won't.

The 400ex would have a real advantage in sand that's for sure.

I ride with 3 guys on occasion that have the 400ex. They make a pretty good trail machine. But quite different from the 250X. If you want more power, it's got it. It doesn't do a bad job at crossing logs either once you learn how to loft the front end just right. Foot peg clearance is good for log hopping and so is the suspension.

On the other hand, "serious" water and mud is more in the 4x4's territory. There are some sporty 4x4's out there now like the Wolverine and the Scrambler models, that is if you can figure out how to keep the water out of the belt drive. It can be done though. I've got some pics of them in some real deep water crossings.

For what it is worth, I just went from a 91 250x with a cobra exhaust and rev box to a 2000 400ex, and I am most please with it. I have yet to miss reverse, simply becuase you can whip it around with a little throttle and body language. Besides it is so light you can pick it up and move it very easily. I have yet to regret trading. I also have a 96 300 4x4 with vampires, but the 400ex doesn't compare with it in mud, but that is obvous.

I didn't realize a 250x or a 300ex had a reverse or at least one that is easy to use. I switched from a 330ex to a 426ex and the power is great but the smaller chassis was easier to fly down tight trails. Buy a 400ex they are worth it
