2000 Honda 400EX or a 1988 Honda 250R
#2
I had an '87 250r and I loved it. The power was awesome, but I like the 4 stroke and can ride it alot better due to the fact that i was raised on them. I have a 2000 400ex with a few mods and I wouldn't trade it for anything out there right now. The places I ride and my style of riding fit the 400 perfectly. I rarely get to top out in fifth, so top end is not that big a deal for me. My two cents is I love the 400ex.

I would recommend that you go with the 400ex if you don't have much experience on the 2-strokes. My friend has a modified Suzuki LT250 Quadracer, and I just got my '00 400EX (been riding a 300 4x4 all my life)... within an hour of getting the EX I was comfortable doing wheelies, jumping, etc., while on the LT250 it's still scary for me to do any stunts. I think the twist throttle is part of my problem, but also the 2-stroke has a much different power curve which I'm not used to, not nearly as smooth as on the 4-strokes. Anyways, if you've got the money to spare, and haven't riden 2-strokes much, or plan to do mostly trail riding, get the EX. If you are used to 2-strokes, or mainly want to race, get the 250R.

Go with the 400ex. Unless you can find a non raced 250 R. Even then go over it with a fine tooth comb It is very hard to find a good one. If you pick a bad one there goes a lot of money to fix it. Check the frame in the front stand the bike on the grab bar and look at the front wheels see if they are the same height if not the frame is bent. Frames are hard to find and after market is around $1500. and up. I own a 1987 R and trying to find a frame myself. Parts are very expensive. If you do find a good one you won't get rid of it there is nothing better out there!!

I own an 89 R and I wouldn't trade it for anything,(EXCEPT CANNONDALE>>>>MAYBE!!!!)
I ride with 2 400s and the owners like theirs as well.I think the R probably has a performance advantage, but the 400s suspension is a lot nicer for all around use. As far as finding an R,I think I would prefer one that has been raced, just for the fact that most racers take much better care (maintenace wise) of their machines than an average rider. As long as you stay away from major mods, you should be ok.I think you will be satisfied with either machine after coming off a 300.
