It won't hurt to run with the lid off but do you have an aftermarket exhaust? air filter? If you do did you rejet the carb? If you did then take that lid off!!! You will have to clean the air filter more but the performance gain is worth it. But if you haven't put on an exhaust, air filter and jet'd the carb then leave the lid on!

Thanks for the info, but I have one more question can I add just a k&n by itself or do I need a jet kit. or can I add a pipe with out adding a k&n and jet kit or any one of them at one time without adding the other. Thanks

To get the full benefit you need it all. To make more power you need more air...fuel...and exhaust! A lot of companies sell packages that have a jet kit, air filter and an exhaust. For a 300ex they shouldn't cost that much maybe in the $300-$400 range

just adding a K&N shouldn't be too much of a change, if you go with a different pipe though you can expect to change your jet. We run the KK&N pre filters on all our bikes and it makes a big diffence.

You won't notice any difference with a Performance filter because you are still getting the same amount of air out to get the most out of a filter you need a pipe too. Chack out my gallery to see whet I did to my air-box lid it looks great not so good in the pics because it's covered in snow.
