the manual suggests two different spark plugs for the 02 rubicon - one of which is a cold plug rated for temps below 40 degrees F.

the machine sat for 2 weeks in temps that got below -20; when i went to start it, i flooded it, then drained the battery. i took the plug out, cleaned it (it was completely covered in soot and fuel) but still can't get the machine to start (even with a charger on the battery for more boost).

does anyone use the cold plug recommended by the manual?

also, any advice on getting this machine started again?

i'll replace the plug this weekend..

hopefully in time to plow another 2 feet of snow..

That plug sounds fouled for sure...Try to richen the mixture screw on the carb...the rubicons are extremely lean out of the crate...is it a new machine?

the machine has about 150 miles on it (with about 40 hours) - i bought it new about 1 year ago (it's a farm machine - indicative of the low miles and high hours).

i should have mentioned that i finally did get it running, but it wouldn't take any gas (kept stalling as soon as i apply throttle). it obviously had lots of fuel in the plug - the sound of the back fire was as loud as my rifle!

good point on the fuel mixture - i'll adjust that this weekend. it definitely runs lean - it seems very easy to adjust the mixture so i'll also try that.

my rubi also goes into accoma when left up in the barn for long periods of time, hit the primer 3 tiems and no choke and it will fire.....yep mine also backfires when i rev it past 60MPH then let off the throttle

 

The hotter plug, that is the plug for colder weather(lower NGK number) works much better in extreme cold. And think it's ok up to about 50F too. JRM right about primer too, if it's much below 10F they will start much better with a few pumps, specially after sitting a couple weeks. A year old and that amount of use, a clogged carb slow jet is a strong possibility if it won't idle without choke after warm. good luck

 

whenever i start mine when its really cold i remove the rght side cover under the seat a give the primer 2 or 3 squirts give it choke and it should start good. and does the pilot screw adjust the feul mixtue?

 

Hey ........before you start your rubi...........turn your key on ....finish getting you riding gear ready and then start it............you carb has a heater, w/ the key on it allows it to start better......if it doesnt work w/o giving it fuel push the carb plunger 1 time

 

My dealer told me that the heater only works after the engine has been started. He said it warms the air in the carb before entering the engine.

 

well i used to work for a dealership and the mechanics showed me and have been using this technique............works for me the weather has been in the low 10's

 

no wonder my batt was dead after only 5 horus of leavin the key on...... hmm, so starting fluid is a no-no i take it, just like a cummings?
