Give me comments about cdi boxes for a 400ex. What kind do you use. I hear that the boxes with ignition advances make the bike hard to start when its cold.

I bought a white bros cdi, i love it. Really notice it alot on those long first gear type hills. As for the hard starting problem the cdi box has nothing to do with that. The best way to help that problem is to up your pilot jet to 40.

BG400,
From what I keep hearing is that the white bros boxes have pins inside that are not working correctly I heard this from a guy from Moto Joe and from several other dealers,
but then again I have spoke to several shops that have never had any trouble.

Guys is there really any difference between the Ignition Control Modules available right now? I have one I bought from CT and my friend has one he bought from WB they are the same brand as the stocker. I think you might find it is the ICM of the XR400, but that is just speculation.

I am happy with mine, it compliments the few mods I have done so far exhaust, air filter, and of course jet kit.

Adam,
I just called CT and they said that their CDI
box isnt available that they got a shipment and some of them werent working out. And he wouldnt sell me one till there a 100%. As for the difference between CT and WB the WB box bumps rev limiter up 1000 rpms and the timing up 6 deg. Where the CT only does the rev. As for the XR 400 cdi I also understand
that it is the XR 250 box..

Interesting EXrider, I thought they were probably all the same. My CT box has been working great as has my friends WB box. I hope whichever one you guys end up with that it doesnt give you any trouble.

For what it's worth, I just installed the WB CDI box and at full throttle my 400ex is not idleing properly (full throttle only). Not sure if it's jetting as I installed a pipe and rejetted to 165 at the same time. Planning on taking a look at the spark plug this weekend.

If at full throttle your 400 is popping, bring the jet down one by one until the popping stops.

I am glad i saw this post !! As i do not have a 400ex, i do have a 300ex. What kind of Pros and Cons is there for the CDI box. Wouls a mainly woods rider and occasional open track rider need this ?? What would it help !! Is it better to get the exhaust mods first, then upgrade the CDI box ??

Thanks

I was just talking with the local Honda dealer and they said that a xr250 cdi will work the same as a wb cdi on a 400ex, and they can sell them for $85. They are on back order, but I am going to get one as soon as they come in. Will let you know what i think.
