Ticking noise after rebuild?
#1
I need some feed back. I just rebuilt my 440ex. I replaced the old piston with a 89.5mm J.E 11:1, before I had a 89mm J.E 12:1. I got mud in my intake and screwed up the rings. When I fired it up, I could here a Ticking sound. I figured it was doing that because the oil hadn't gone through the whole motor. I fired it up twice now, and it's still making that ticking. When I first built it to a 440, It had a slight ticking noise but this noise is louder. I didn't adjust the valves because it was running fine before I got mud in the intake. Could it be a valve, rocker, bearing or just still in breaking in mode? I have not ridden it yet. I've started it twice and let it idle for about five minutes. I starts-up great and even feels more responsive when I hit the throttle. What could it be?

You could have a worn out (stretched) cam chain. With the motor mods, you should have put in a heavy duty cam chain. Check your cam chain tensioner. Unbolt it, and if it pops off the side of your motor about 1/4 inch, it's still good. But the chain could be loose and slapping around inside your motor. Mine did this when my idle was adjusted too low. Everytime the motor would "hiccup" the chain would slap the engine case. Once the motor was warmed up and idling smoothly, it wouldn't make the noise. I increased my idle speed, and the ticking went away.

Just because your quad is running ok doesn't necessarily means the valves are within spec. My EX was running great, and all of a sudden I lost all compression. I found out that my valves were a bit tight, and it burnt them up, along with my rings. I would definatelt check the valves, and install a heavy duty cam chain. Even if the noise your hearing isn't the cam chain, it would be insurance down the road.

Well, the valves were far out of adjustment but it still ticks. I rode it today, and it has way more power now with the new 89.5mm (11:1) piston than with the old 89mm (12:1). I am surprised that .5mm's make that big of a differance. I'll ignore the ticking for now. Tomorrow I am going to race round 3 of the ITP series. We will see if it holds up for tomorrow.

Well, it wasn't the timing chain. It was the valves. I blow a hole in my piston because the ticking was the piston hitting the intake valve. The timing could have been off or the mud messed up the intake valve.

I've already done that and replaced the timing chain with a heavy duty one. The ticking noise was my piston hitting a intake valve before the vavle broke off any really messed up my motor.
