Chain adjustment on 300EX "HELP"
#1
Need some help here.
I have a 300EX that the chain keeps coming lose. The more I ride, the loser it gets. Adjust it back and it gets lose again. The quad was purchased used. (Just to let you know.)
Looking in my service manual, it says that the axle bearing holder should be turned clockwise to increase slack and counter clockwise to decrease slack. My quad is the opposite. Clockwise decreases slack and counter clockwise increases slack. I am thinking that something was put together wrong when someone put new bearings in.
Any thoughts?
I forgot this. The service manual says nothing about having to losen the axle bearing holder stop bolt. I have to losen it to adjust my chain.

My sister in law has a 300ex and on hers you adjust the chain by turning the bearing holder towards the dirt to get the chain tighter and the opposite to get it loose. The only thing I can think of is that your set screws are striped ( the 2 allen screws ) which means they are not pinching like they should. Maybe start your looking in this direction. I hope you find your problem.

In all the eccentric type adjusters that Honda uses that I have ever adjusted personally, clockwise IS tighten and counter clockwise is loosen. So your manual must be wrong about that. If your hub is actually moving back (mark it and make sure this is the case), it bears removal and inspection. Having to loosen the stopper bolt to turn the eccentric could indicate binding, improper fit or breakage. If not, make sure the swing arm pivots aren't shot, making it impossible to adjust the chain properly. Also, some cheap, non o-ring type chains can stretch REALLY fast.

Yes to your ? about facing the tire. How long is the factory axle holder bolt? I think this one was replaced with one that is way to long.
I took the rear end apart tonight. What a mess. Some people are to stupid to have ATVs. I have to ge a new Axle bearing holder assembly. It is TRASHED!!!!

Update.
Thanks to the dumb *** that worked on this bike last I have to order $239.12 in parts. That price is from the Service Honda web page. Anybody know a better place to order from?
The Axle bearing holder assembly was in wrong and badly wore out.

you can get a new aftermarket bearing carrier that is better than stock for 150 or less. Ebay is a good source for that type of thing. i got one for my 250x for $100 and it is a double row bearing carrier. That is where i would check. Honda parts are always more expensive than the aftermarket.
