A pipe, k&n, reeds, and wiseco piston would be the first mods. Porting and polishing it will really make u happy. I think turf tamers would be ur best bet they have alot of grip ideal for loose surfaces. If u get 18" it will be kinda hard to wheelie but its very possible with some 20" u could wheelie in 4,5, or even 6th if u wanted will no problem

The differences in years? Arg! So many and so much time to list. Personally, find an R and buy it. Each year has things that are slightly different, but Honda never made a bad year R!
First mods; get a pipe/silencer combo that is for the style riding you're gonna do, get a K & N air filter with an Outerwear (or get a Uni filter), get a handful of main jets for the carb and some new reeds. Just doing this will really wake up the motor and let it breathe!
Porting and polishing and new piston, very good ideas but you may not need to do them right away as it involves tearing down the top-end, although doing a top-end will give you confidence that you're going to be OK for a while. I do new top-ends every other year on both the Rs here (we only get to ride about every-other month lately).
Once you install the pipe/filter/reeds (and a brand new plug and gap it to .022, I don't care what the manual says Rs have a weak ignition so gap it down), start it up, let it warm up good, ride it easy for about 10 minutes until good and warm. Then get going in like 4th gear, WOT, hold for a "10" count. Then, all at the same time, pull in clutch, keep throttle wide open, shut off motor, coast to a stop without letting out the clutch. Pull the plug out when you can, and "read" it. Black/oily, too rich and step down a size in the main jet. White plug is way too lean and you need to increase main jet size. Move only one jet size at a time and redo the plug check with a new plug each time until you get a light-brown plug. Then you're ready.
Jumping, man that's what a R does better than anything else. I'm a lousy jumper and tend to crash when I do, so I don't do much of it, but I have seen some incredible jumps.
The stock R only weighs about 335lbs dry, maybe 350 full of gas.
Depending on how long you like to ride, you may want to consider getting a larger fuel tank. Stockers are only 2.4 gallons and that includes the reserve and I've run out of fuel a lot of times so I have the a IMS 3.6 gallon tanks and haven't had another problem with lack of fuel.
I wish my cat would stop sitting on my monitor and wagging his tail!

Thanks,

Thanks for all the time you guys took to post all this info, (I just cant get off this site, hope I wasnt to much trouble ) I think I made my mind up to buy an r even though they they might cost a little more than some used atv's I think it will be worth it.
Thanks for everything'
