Default Clutch Adjustment on Rancher?

Was wondering if anyone knew the best way to get the most out of their Rancher. There's a way of increasing an decreasing the clutch. What are these two different ways mean. 1 way- for torque / 1 way- for speed?
please let me know.
Thankx

There is only one clutch adjustment on you rancher. It adjusts the freeplay in the shift linkeage. There is only one correct setting.

Dzzy, What do you mean theres only one correct way. Can you tell me when you would use the free-play in the clutch. apose too not being free. Does it make it shift easier or harder depending on how you adjust it?
Thankx............

The freeplay is like the freeplay in a vehicle's clutch. The cluth petal needs to move freely about one inch before it starts to disengauge the clutch. If you adjuct out all the free play it is like driving a car and holding in the clutch petal a little bit, it will burn up the clutch. If you have too much freeplay, the clutch may not fully disengauge when depressed making it harder to shift. No freeplay does not make it easier to shift gears.

Like dzzy says, there is only one correct asjustment for the clutch in your Rancher. The only thing you will get out of a clutch that is not correctly adjusted is problems with your clutch. You will deffinatly gain nothing from adjusting your clutch any different than Honda recommends.

What might that setting be? I've replaced the clutch, and shift plate in mine... and the shifter on the left side on the motor behind the front cover... still jumps off in 4-5th gear. My dealer told me it was doing that because I needed a new shift plate...... Got one........ still can't ride it

Turn the adjuster screw counterclockwise til you feel resistance, then clockwise one quarter turn, don't allow it to turn when you tighten the locknut. Still got problems with yours davidpaj? I think before you said it was stuck in fifth gear? What do you mean "jumping off" in fourth and fifth gear? You mean jumping out of gear?

Yeah, I replaced the clutch, that fixed it for a few mins... then the shifter (gear shift fork) jumped off between 3-4th gear. Okay, back to the dealer... they said that was a product of the shift plate recall... Okay got a shift plate installed it. Ran fine for half a day.... The only problem I had at that time was sometimes it would go in reverse... sometimes not. Then the gear shift fork jumped off again in 3-4th gear. If you take the front cover off that actcual clutch adjustment refering to adjust the pressure applied to that same gearshift fork when shifting..... that's why I asked the right adjustment to keep it from jumped off. When the fork jumps off the atv "free rolls" until you put the fork back on

Oh yeah, you're the guy with the backordered clutch parts, davidpaj. I don't think the clutch adjustment would cause the problem you describe. If I understand you correctly the gearshift plate (part that turns the shift drum underneath the front cover) is jumping off the pins on the shift drum? If that's the case there's still something wrong in the gearshift linkeage, or something is assembled wrong. Bring it back the the dealer, or check to make sure the thrust washers are intact, springs intact, and the bolt that holds the detent on the shift drum is tight. I haven't seen the symptom you describe on a rancher. The gearshift plate issue was a cracking and spreading of the part that turns the shift drum, thereby leaving you only able to either shift up or down (essentially stuck in reverse or fifth), but it stayed engaged with the drum detent. If there's way too much play in the clutch linkeage (ala maladjustment), it would cause tough and clunky shifting, and I suppose could even damage the gearshift linkeage eventually, but I've never seen this happen.

Hi Dizzy, this should give you and everyone a better insight to my issue. Go to http://216.37.204.203/Honda_OEM/Hond...pe=13&A=70&B=4 Part number 13, fits over part number 12 down on the left side of the motor. Part number 13, is jumping off part 12 when shifting between 3rd 4th gear. When that happens even though the display shows the machine in gear, in fact it is not. The machine will "free roll" in any gear it no longer will pull the back tires
