It is 1903. It is date stamped right on the barrell. I was the most used and prefferred sniper rifle in WWI & WW2, even after the carbine replaced it in general service. I use my grandfathers original gun in a hand carved walnut stock from a tree he fell on the family farm, with the origin Leopold Scope (the first gas charged scope Leopold made.) The gas leaked and the rectiles (crosshairs froze) Since I am in OR and Leopold headquarters is a forty minute drive I took it up there. It was the only model that they didn't have in their display case, and they actually machined all the parts to original factory specs. Like Crafstman tools, their guanateed for life and do stand behind them.

I have several "Cartridges of the World" books so I will check. But I thought the '06 was also the year it was introduced. It is a .30 caliber, hence the "30" and then the year"06". I could be wrong but I will look it up. Any help?

Looks like they didn't make it until 1906, History of 30-06
I didn't read the whole thing, but maybe you have a 30-03 there Mikes700sp.

A nice one to add to the collection. The marlin 30.30 was my first deer hunting rifle. I have killed dozens of deer with it. Take care of it and it will last forever. Also a good hog gun. That reminds me I need to get my ole trusty marlin out and take her for a spin.

I'm going to wander out on a coupla limbs here and try to share some knowledge.
First limb: 30-30 refers to .30 caliber bore size, the second thirty refers to the original black powder charge of 30 grains of powder for this cartridge. Same for the 38-55 Winchester, 45-70 Gov't, the 30-40 Krag and the old 50-100-405 Sharps. In the last instance, the third number refers to the bullet weight recommended for that cartridge.
Second limb: I think, and I stress the think part here, that the -06 in 30-06 refers to the parent cartridge the 30-06 was derived from, and I believe it was either the 606 Jeffries or 606 Nitro Express, both express cartridges designed around the turn of the century for dangerous African game.
Incidentally, and this I know for a fact, several cartridges were derived from the 30-06, some of which were the 25-06, the 270 Winchester, and another that I can think of offhand is maybe the 280 Remington.
