204 Ruger
#1
Anybody else out there have one of these guns yet? I got one for christmas and was wondering if anybody has needed to do any modifications to make their gun better.
I haven't had much time to do some group and velocity testing yet but it seems like a great gun to shoot so far. If I like it I'll probably redo the trigger and get it down to that 2 lb. range.
I do have to say it works though......got my first coyote with it already just tonight......died instantly at 250 yards so I guess the knockdown power is there. The bullet went clean through.

I think it will be a great dog gun. But your bullet shouldn't go straight through. The .204 Ruger was developed between Ruger and Hornady. Were you using Vmax factory ammo? It would be very unusual for the bullet to go through. It is made to expand super fast....leave a small hole going in and then explode, leaving no exit wound....therefore keeping the pelt in good condition.....
I use a .17 Remington for most of my coyote hunting....I load it with 20 grain Vmax bullets and have the speed at 4200 fps...similar to the factory .204 Ruger loads which are going around 4255 fps. I never had had an exit wound. It does do a serious exposion if you hit the shoulder going in, but otherwise a tiny hole and no exit wound....

I was suprised myself that the bullet did go through....yes, it was the 32 grain v-max....factory load
I use a 55 grain v-max in my 22-250 and also 120 grain v-max in my 7mm rem mag.....both are handloaded. They fragment on impact.
Maybe it was just a fluke that the bullet went throughwith the 204, or maybe just a partial fragment tore the hide on the exit side.
Whatever did happen though it didn't do much damage
