The 9417 is great but I cant get it to fit me.

The Remington 597 is a great gun too, >1" at 100 yards. The magazine design is horrible, the rounds get bunched up and it takes about 5 minutes to unjam them. If it had a 10/22 like rotary magazine, it would be perfect.

Im thinking about unloading these two and either getting a Ruger 77 target in .204. Gotta love 4200 fps! A friend suggested a 6mm PPC but I hate dishing out $2 per shot. I like the old school .22-250 and .220 swift but Im intrigued by the WSSM in .223.

Once again, I need opinions....

Anybody want to buy a 9417 or a 597?

I'm shooting a .17 Remington, its a custom setup, I have a Brown Precision stock, it is Pillar and Glass Bedded....has a Shilen trigger and believe it or not, I have a muzzle brake installed (kicks less than my .22 magnum)....

I'm shooting Hornady 20 grain Vmax bullets....4200 fps. My first loads were over 4500 fps, still not max pressure or loads, but a few of them were coming apart....and I didn't want to wear out the bore..... I shoot 1/4" groups, 5 shots, 100 yards. My best group was .13" at 100 yards and .32" at 200 yards....

I thought about the .204 Ruger, seems like fine cartridge....the .17 Remington does awesome....

you can see a pic of the .17 and me with some dogs here...page down, i'm the 3rd person down with 3 dogs:

.17 remington

don't click on my name link if you want to email me, it will be my old email address...also, the dogs in the pic was when i was using .25 Hornadys before they came out with the 20 grain...

.223 is a nice round. The ammo is cheap and readily available. It is a great choice to bring to the range to play around with , or to bring out in the woods to take down coyote and such.

Hey Elkbow sounds like you're really dialed with your 17. What barrel are you using?

Only bad thing about stepping up to a rimfire is that you will need hearing protection. .17's you can still get away without them. I think I am going to go for the Browning BL 17. I love my BL 22!

Shady....I'm using the stock barrel...why? because the accuracies in manufacturing on the stock barrels are close to that of having a custom barrel made, they didn't use to be, but they are now....I have guns with custom barrels...but what you first do is see if you can get your stock barrel to shoot and if not, then replace it with a Douglas Air Gauged or Shilen Match barrel....

I have a process for break-in of new barrels, takes about 2 hours of cleaning and polishing with JB....then I go to the range fire one shot and clean, one shot and clean, i do this for 20 rounds, then I do 3 shots and clean, 3 shots and clean, for another 30 rounds, then I do my 5 shot groups....

the JB Bore Paste is used only to within 1 inch of the bullet....you have to clean/polish from the muzzle end, so need to be careful....not sure if you seen this before, but works great....if I can't get a gun to shoot under 1/2" 5 shot groups at 100 yards with my handloads, I sell it or replace the barrel....

Elkbow, I do something like that breaking in my barrels but not quite as detailed. I haven't heard of that JB bore pase process you described. That's shooting very well on a factory barrel, but your earlier post didn't say what type of rifle you were shooting, so I was curious. An honest 5 inside half inch capability is outstanding on any barrel, especially factory ones, although I do agree with you the factory tolerances are very good these days.
