17 HMR and17 HM2

I was at a Gander Mountain store the other day looking at the ammunition. One box was 17HMR the other was 17 HM2. The 17HM2 shells were shorter like a .22 long rifle. It must be a new cartridge. It didn't look like it would even work in the 17 HMR. It was too short. I never read anything about the HM2. There were write ups everywhere about the 17HMR when it came out. Anyone know anything about the 17HM2.

The 17HM2 is just a 22LR necked down to .17. Do not use it in the .17HMR gun. Just about every gun manufacture is now making the .17hm2. It is actually fairly close in velocity to .17hmr. Go to rimfirecentral.com, they are a wealth of info.

as said above, its a necked down .22 LR. i don't really see a need for it unless you are exterminating chipmunks...lol...
I have the .17 HMR, its okay for certain things, but even a .22 Mag necked down to .17 has it limitations.....

The 17HMR or HM2 should make a great squirrel rifle. Less chance of riccochet. I know that every once in a while I hear the whine of a .22 bullet when I shoot at something. That 17 grain bullet should desintegrate when it hits anything. I've heard of the 17HMR reffered to as a 200yd. squirrel rifle.

I love my .17 HMR. With a BSA 6X18 power "Sweet 17" scope on it, I shot 23 Groundhogs and a handful of Racoons. All from distances anywhere from 40 yards all the way out to 140 yards using Hornady ammo. The Hornady ammo usually took them down in one shot, but some CCI ammo I used wasn't as accurate and usually took more than one shot...sometimes as many as four.

How do you like the sweet seventeen scope? Me and my stepdad both bought them for our .17hmrs and both scopes are junk........ I havn't really shot much with my .17 just a coon at about 50yards running it put him down one shot for the count. You should get any whizzers with a .17 the bullets are design to blow apart pretty much on contact.

So far so good on the "Sweet 17" scope...no problems. I was kinda leary about buying it at first cause they are a low end scope price wise. Shot a chipmunk that was chewing on the corner of the barn the other day using my Savage .17HMR and Hornady ammo from a bipod at about 40 to 50 yards......All I can say is the end result was pretty nasty.....not much of the little rodent left.....Can't wait until the "whistlepigs" (groundhogs) start coming out of their holes.

Fyrewood: I had bad luck with the CCI ammo also. Shot a coyote, he went down, did a spin and got up and ran off. It was a long shot so I didn't think too much of it but when I shot one in the front shoulder at 50 ft.(feet), he looked at his shoulder to see what stung him and ran over the rocks I knew this wasn't good. I sold all my CCI ammo on e-day and bought Hornady. I think the red tipped points will open up better. Bottom line, I don't think the 17HMR is really adequate for an animal as large as a coyote. The little 17 is a tack driver tho. I have the Winchester 9417.
