Default ANY ONE EVER HAVE A GUN GO OFF BY ITSELF!?

any one ever have this happen we have a rem 700 adl in 308 caliber it is about 20 to 25 yrs old you have to take the saftey off on this gun to eject a shell , bolt is locked when the saftey is on, well any way my brother came into the garage (garage is not connected to my house thank god) laid the gun up on the counter took his gloves off and with the gun laying on the counter flipped the saftey off to eject the shells and the gun went boom!!!! he had his fingers no where near the trigger it just went off when he flipped the safety off now here is where story gets good ill explain bullet path.. after initial shock i started tracing where bullet went as the bullet left the gun it hit the top of a windex bottle i had sitting on my tool box witch made bullet deform as the hole in my tool box is not round after going thru my nice tool box it split int four pieces. two of these were relatively small as they went thru one side of garage the other two well lets see one went thru my $400 dollar hunting coat about 15 places as it hung on the wall and then it went thru the wall i cound not find this ones final resting spot the other one went thru $200 hunting coveralls on said wall and its final resting place was in by brothers truck after it went thru the windshield, after much cursing and ragging on brother i sewed many holes in my clothes he got a new action for his gun and a new windshield for his truck but real question is this has this ever happened to any one elses gun i doubt any one else could have had the after efects i did its kind of funny to look back on this but think what might have happened if wife or kids would have been home and garage pointed towards house never carry a loaded gun indoors

I've not had it happen to me personally but I have heard of it happening, and its not limited to Remingtons( although having to take the safety off to unlock the bolt isnt the best design) . There's a real lesson to be learned here though. Not to preach but one of the cardinal rules of gun safety is to always point the muzzle in a safe direction. Had your borther been standing with the muzzle pointed downward into the ground (oustide the garage) the only damage you would have reported was a pair of soiled shorts.

99 times out of 100 this happens because somebody either improperly adjusted the trigger, or the trigger is filled with dirt, grime, or congealed oil and it needs a thorough cleaning.

I've read something about Remington 700s having some sort of predilection for this though I don't know the particulars. Something about unintentional discharge when pushing off the safety in some circumstances.

Like Prong said, an improperly adjusted trigger can do this too. I've seen some real horrorshow trigger jobs. It is definitely something you want to trust to a very good gunsmith. A shame a brand new gun needs a trigger job but all of them I've tried lately are heavy, creepy garbage with the exception of the new Savage AccuTrigger. Best feature to be introduced into rifles in ages. THE reason why my next rifle will be a Savage.

In any event I'm glad no one was injured and hopefully from now on your brother will remember to ALWAYS keep the muzzle in a safe direction especially when loading or unloading. Muzzle discipline. Muzzle discipline. Muzzle discipline. Muzzle discipline. Muzzle discipline.

I have a friend who purchased a 6 mm Re. 700 adl at a pawn shop, and the same thing happened to him,the gun went off when he was trying to eject the shells by running them through the chamber with the bolt.....needlessly to say,you must always unload your weapon(guns) outside and pointed in a safe direction....the sear on the trigger was the culprit on his rifle....set too lite.....that is why I shoot a model 70 WINCHESTER....Claw foot extractor(for positive ejection) and three position safety, which allows the shooter to unload his rifle with out taking the gun off safe....I think Ruger has that on their model77.....

My dad has a Beretta Silver Pigeon II. Everyonce in a while when you were shooting it both barrels would go off at the same time. Turns out the last owner had been filling with the triggers and that caused it. But it was wierd you could be shooting at some clay birds and suddenly you would get a big kick instead of a little one. Lol, then we realized what was happening.

Sounds like the sear pin is possibly bad or the trigger has been played with. Either way, I'd suggest gettiing it checked out before someone gets hurt.
