Depends on so many things it's really impossible to answer your question. Do you want an overhead hoist or are you going to use a floor hoist? Are you going to be doing welding? What about a fume extraction system? The list goes on and on.

First thing you might want to consider is what this plan will do to your home insurance. If the garage is attached to the house do you need to add a fire wall and door? What about a fire alarm system. What is the code in your area about your plans?

Good place to start would be your insurance agent and the local building department so you don't do something that may cost you a lot down the road.
