wa turkey

Grizz:
I've never hunted turkey before, but where I elk hunt, there are tons of them all over the place. I usually see the most of them in the spring time just after the snow melts out of the area, and even through the year towards deer season. When people start arriving for hunting season, the turkey kind of dissappear for a while. Last spring my Dad and I saw a few different groups ranging between 15-20 in one group, up to probably 50-60 in the last group. During deer season, I chased a group of around 35-40 on foot-they're a lot quicker than you'd think! Heh heh heh.
Anyway, this is above the Naches/Rimrock area a bit-Ouside of Yakima. If you'd like more details, send me an email, I'll give you a little better directions and descriptions. Another place I've seen a ton of turkeys is down in the Blue mountains around the Tucannon area. The valley in towards the Tucannon from the highway side going from Dayton to Lewiston would be the entrance. I usually start seeing them a few miles before you get to the "Last Resort" convenience store, on up the canyon past the various lakes and fish hatchery. Also, if you leave Dayton and proceed on down the Hartsock grade, which is the top way down into the Tucannon, you should see a bunch out in the various fields along the way. I've seen groups there with well over 50 birds at times.
Anyway, those are about the best places I can think of right now. My buddy and I have been talking about possibly starting turkey hunting. Up above Yakima, I've been within 10-15 yards of them before. Dad and I rode right past a large group on the 'Cats at about 20 yards, they didn't seem to care about us at all-no pressure from people on them up there.
Anyway, best of luck,
Mike
