Default Newbie from Texas preparing for a trip to Salida, CO!

Hello everyone. Figured I'd drop in and familiarize myself with the atv community as I prepare for our upcoming yearly trip to CO. Our family goes once a year to Colorado and for the last two years, we have rented atv's from a local rental store. When I called up there to check rates, I found out that the rates have gone through the roof. This brought about the idea of purchasing two used units and either 1. selling them when we get back or 2. holding onto them and seeking out some local adventures a little more thoroughly.

We don't ride hard and it's all just for fun so, there's no need for a $10k 800cc bike. We just need something reliable, priced competitively, and in good condition.

So far, I have made 1 purchase.. A used 2006 Honda Foreman 500 4x4 with 900ish miles and in very decent condition. The front left CV boot is torn and needs to be replaced, but that, from what I can tell is all the service that needs to be addressed. More than likely, I'll throw an oil change in it and maybe an air filter.

I still have one to purchase. Tomorrow we have a 04 Yamaha 4XX Kodiak 4x4 that we will be looking at and a few ranchers at the end of the week.

My only other concern is whether or not we will need to jet our quads. We will be riding at or above 9k feet. From the little I have read, this might be a little of a stretch for a bike jetted for sea level (I live in Houston).

I know this a intro thread, but I figured I'd put all my thoughts into one instead up newbing up all the other sections all at once.

Let me know what you guys think and thanks for the opportunity to join the site.

Thanks
Stan

Welcome! Re jetting for a weeks ride will not be necessary! You will find it not worth the hassle for a short trips worth of your time!

Welcome, just north of you in Willis Texas. If it were me I would rejet and go 10 smaller. Not a hard job take about 30 minutes per quad.

Thanks guys for the welcomes and thanks papa for the info! I'm assuming the local Honda dealer will stock smaller jets?

Thanks guys. What are your feelings on Artic Cats? Specifically the 06 650's?

Welcome to the forums TOrk
I live in Odessa/Midland.
I hear the Salida area is fantastic!
If it were me I would make sure to take extra spark plugs
and put K&N filters on.
