New to the site, just doing some research on ATVs to make sure I buy the right one. Currently own a 2004 Yamaha TTR225 that I took in on a trade, I've never rode a dirt bike until about a month ago when I got this one - realized I missed riding and am looking to make a purchase soon.

Haven't rode a lot in my adult years - rode a Kawasaki 300 Bayou 2x4 some over the last few years but nothing serious.

Looking for the right quad - I had my eye on a Polaris Scrambler 500 HO AWD but someone mentioned it might have issues with water/mud due to belt driven so now I'm back at square one!


Gonna do some research if there are any stickies I need to be directed to feel free to drop a hint - thanks!

I've never had a problem with a belt getting wet even in headlight deep water. Had a Polaris Xplorer 250 4x4, Polaris Sportsman X2, and the current Can-Am Outlander. Only time I saw a belt get wet and slip was when a quad was stuck in a deep waterhole for almost a 1/2 hour. Pulled it out and opened the drain plug. Revved it and it was fine the rest of the day.

 

Thats great to hear! I have watched numerous videos of the polaris in the water/mud and it seemed to do great. I'm not looking for a mud buggy but I don't mind hitting a mud hole if it's in the middle of my way!

I've rode a 650 Brute Force and was impressed with the power but was a little nervous about how tall it seemed vs the Bayou I was riding. Seemed like it was a lot easier to get tilted the wrong way and have it roll? Any issues with these taller quads and climbing? I know they are heavier and probably less likely to flip back due to that but the higher center of gravity was something that i was concerned about
