If the thumb lever has too much slack the etc contacts would touch and the machine wouldn't idle. Needs to have 1/8" max play at the lever.I'd still pull the black wire from the limiter just as a process of elimination to see if it's causing loss of power. If it still does the same thing, head for the clutches. Check the belt for excessive stretch or glazing.Just place a straight edge over the top of the clutches and pull down on the center of the belt.If you have more than an inch and a half play from the top of the belt to the straight edge, time for a new belt. Most common cause on clutch problems was the belt and the 3 ramp buttons in the driven clutch ground down over time. The manual goes into detail on the clutches and repair if needed.I've found a lot of ramp buttons like this or worse. If worn down the helix can slip and you loose power.

Have you pulled the black wire yet?? IF you have and still no difference then take a timing light and see if the light flashes in time with the missing and back firing. If it does it's still an electrical problem. If the light stays steady during the back firing,it's a mechanical problem, such as flattened cam lobe, cam timing slipped because of a broken woodruff key, a fuel supply problem or a carb related problem, etc.

HAVE YOU PULLED THE BLACK WIRE FROM THE REVERSE LIMITER?? If not, pull it and and see if it that's causing the problem. If it doesn't help use the timing light method..
