Welcome to the forums. May be as simple as needing a new exhaust donut. Item#15.

Thank you for your help. When i first got this atv an cleaned the carb i think the float wasnt quite right an flooded engine. Had some gas come out of exaust donut. Is this an indication that its bad? Is sounds like an engine running without oil. Has a complete top end rebuild. New reeds. New plug. I am new to 2 stroke but i have an 02 that runs allot more quite. Could the bottom end be bad? An how could i check? I am mechanically inclined and have my own shop n tools for most job just didnt want to tear it completely apart

Also it has to rev allot higher to engage the clutch than my 02. But my 02 needs a top end but still runs. Was wondering also if clutch would sound bad before actually not driveing the quad anymore.....again thanks for your help i truly appreciate it.

If fuel getting into the exhaust seeped out of the donut you can at least assume it's bad. You may have other problems sounds like. The drive belt could be the problem or the clutches. You can understand a little more about engines and clutches along with the fuel system with a service manual.2003 Polaris Sportsman 90 Service Manual PDF Download

I think the noise on start up is the starter clutch catching or something but would that starter system make noise while quad is running? Also i was told not to run engine without the cover over the clutches. Is this true an will i cause damage if i do? I want to inspect whats going on during starring and running. Thanks

That's where the manual can help. It goes into detail on the starter clutch, idle gear, etc.

Thank you. I will try to figure out how to download the manual. I am a bit computer challenged.
