Buying a used outlander thoughts ?
#1
hey There I was wondering if a 2007 800 outlander max xt with 2450 original kms would be a decent starting bike but I’ve read some bad things about them and was wondering if I should save my money to buy a newer model or just go and buy this one with decently low kilometres since it’s the cheapeast in my area ? Any help would be appreciated thanks

You didn't say the price, but 2450 km's is fairly low. You said a (starter bike) but I'm guessing you are not a novice, as 800 cc will be very quick. The only thing that I've heard, some might have had frames fail, but any bike will suffer frame failure if you drive em off a cliff... I would certainly look at it. I'm a 100% Cat guy, but Can Ams tickle my fancy, too. If there is actually a weak area of the frame, bet a good welder can strengthen it. You will like the longer wheel base.

Look for maintence records and give the bike a thorough inspection including the frame. If it is in great condition and the frame is solid and the price is right then why not. An 800 is far more than a starter machine! Not sure what your plans will be but I have been riding for 25 yrs and have never needed anything with that big of a motor unless you riding at really high elevations in the mountains.

The 2007 does have the original Generation One frame. It is weak in the area where the front lower A-arms attach to the frame. Hit a rock or other obstacle with a front tire and they bend easily compared to other makers' frames. Somewhat easy fix is to insert material into the frame from the rear to strengthen it. My son had a Renegade 500 that we put a plastic insert into. I had an Outlander Max 650 that I put three pieces of 1.25" square box aluminum. Didn't worry about the frames after that. The 800 has a lot of power. It will wheelie with ease. Have to be a bit careful about hitting the throttle in a turn. If you don't move your weight forward before you hit the throttle you're going to go straight as the throttle will lift the front end enough to take away a lot of your traction. That being said, the engine will put a big smile on your face.
