Hello, my name is Marius, aka SIC, I am an architect from Romania, a biker and a quad fan. I'm 41. I've started my quad adventure a few years ago with a complete overhaul of a chinese 110cc atv that I took from junkyard just to see how they are made. It was fun and now I still use it to teach my 5 year old kid how to ride one. I got myself a Yamaha Blaster 2 years ago, all went well until early this year my engine broke down, and now I have a little time to tinker with it so I want to put a CG250 4 stroke zongshen new motor in it, with rear gear and electric starter for an old-fart who was tired of kicking the kick-start and was wondering if anyone tried this before ? I ran into a couple of prblems but hopefully will be able to get them right, especially motor mounts. If anyone can give me some advice I would be glad, thanks !
Thank you guys for welcoming me ! I've got the motor up and running, just need to fix some electric connections and the idle speed of this kinky chinese motor, but all in all, by now I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I wish I could upload the movie with the first engine run (if you know how one can do that please let me know). Just so you know, the starter of this engine needs A LOT of amps, and I mean A LOT !!! I had to serial connect 2 motorcycle batteries to start this one. The cables that came with the new electric harness I bought for this engine just melted, so now I just have to redo the cables with bigger diameter ones to be able to coop with the amperage needed.
Your opening post reminded me of my much younger years. Whether it be motorbikes, snowmobiles, ATVs (3-wheelers back then), boats, golf karts, I used to take engines, axles, mufflers, suspensions, tracks, etc. etc. from various different parts units and "make fit" onto a master singe unit. Doing the work in my dad's shop was more fun than riding it afterwards. Oh, I miss those younger age years. Now, new technology electric start and power steering on snowmobiles and ATVs are my best friends. (LOL!) Again... Welcome and good luck with your DIY MacGyver project.
If you don't know: MacGyver is a verb meaning "to make, form, or repair (something) with what is conveniently on hand."
My frankenstein yamaha works ! Today I had my first test run and, after a full day of fixing things like leaking exhaust, chain tension and lenght, little electrical mishaps, I finally got to ride it for the first time after a full year without a working engine ! It works like charm and just after this test run I can say this engine got more initial power (torque) than the 195 cc 2 stroke it had before. Of course I like this 250cc more for the electric starter and the reverse gear which I wanted so much when I started to use this quad. So, all in all, a good transition with quite a bit of custom work but in the end it payed well ! 😊
