Default Hello also from Ontario

Hi all
Probably a dumb question. Here goes. Been learning off friends 700 kvvf last 2 years. winching, swamping, etc. it lost it's 4x4 through I think cruddy components, ie cheap metal. I looked it up, part hard to come by but i am actually good on mechanical .... anyway I bought an old moto 4 yamaha 225, excellent condition. I had always wanted an atv, father dead set against it. Friends just changes automatically, mine doesn't. His has 0 bakes so I've learned to deal with that, But I do not understand the shifter on mine,I am use to cars, 78 nova, 81 malibu, gutless cutless, 81 bronco,,,xterra, a zillion other things, I'm not a dummy with mechanics I just dont understand this foot shifter, could someone explain??? I can speed shift on a reg standard, ie jump 1 to 3 no clutch but I really don't understand this foot thingy. Thanks for any help
