My Tecate-4 story

My Tecate-4 story -- thanks to B&B Racing!!
At the end of January I bought an ’88 Kawasaki Tecate-4. I was told that it only needed a flywheel/stator installed and he even supplied me with the parts. I was excited to have found such a good deal – or so I thought. When I got to his house, the quad was really muddy so it was difficult to give it a good look over. Some of the basic parts were missing because it was slowly being cannibalized by other quads. I talked to the guy for a while and he seemed straight enough so I took the chance and bought it.
I got it home and started tearing it down. The more I got into it the more I lost heart in the project. There was a lot more wrong here then I thought. I had to make the decision whether this machine was even worth fixing. I was a hair away from parting it out and then I met John Boschma from B&B Racing. He showed me pics of his KXF with the KX500 motor in it. The thing was beyond sweet. So I regained my interest in the project and ordered a few parts from him. The parts arrived quickly and in excellent shape. I continued to pull the quad apart and restore everything as I went. Soon I had a bare frame and had many broken bolts to drill and tap. I found that the project had grown in leaps and bounds. If I wanted to ride any time in the next 3-4 months then I had to job out the motor work. I figured that since John was located only a few hours from me that I would have him do the work.
Like I said, the quad had surprises for me everywhere that I looked. For every one thing that I found to be right there were ten things wrong. So I assumed that the motor was going to be worse then I expected. When I showed up with the motor, John went over it with me very carefully and we discussed my riding style. I finally finished the break-in procedure on my motor and was able to really get on it. This thing is incredible.
