Default Update on overheating problem and water filter

Hey everyone,

Today I went down to the local Kawi dealer to show him the result of my little problem that I experienced this weekend. I had called ahead to find out if he had the part in stock and he told me that they didn't have it in stock and that they had never ordered this part before. I told him that he would have to order at least 3 of these since we had at least 3 P650 around town that had the same problem during the weekend. So when I went over to show him the damaged part, he informed me that he checked the part number that I gave him, and I guess that Kawasaki has updated this part with a new part number. It looks like Kawasaki changed or updated the part. Maybe Kawasaki realized that the old part might of been a weak point in the cooling system. I'm anxious to see what the new part looks like. I'll keep you updated and I'll try to find out what the new part number is.

Here is a picture of the melted water filter. Notice how the small end is all melted and crooked. Also inside the filter you can see everything is melted.

and here is a picture of the whole unit

in case you haven't read my report on my weekend, you can find it here.

Weekend Report

Where are you located in New Brunswick? The weather was awesome all weekend. Friday was a nice run, too bad there wasn't enough water on the trail to clean out the rad. I really wish they would of had a pressure washer at the halfway point since they woudn't allow us to go into the river. This would of solved a lot of problems. I missed Sunday's ride since I only got a replacement hose around noon time. Monday's run was the best run of the weekend.

Kawidan have any of you guys been using water wteer or any other coolant additive.

My coolant strainer melted too last year. You should just get a short piece oh hose and a brass barb fitting to fix it until the part comes in.

That is not the only plastic part in the system that causes problems. The water fill neck also gets hot and gets messed up. hope yours is OK, it costs a whole lot more.

I can't remember where ( but could look it up again )( one of the 2 X 4 ripper catologs ) I saw an inline cooler that was a small piece of pipe or machined aluminum with fins on it, & claimed to pull alot of heat out of the coolant, as it passes through it... I've never had problems with the coolant filter, but perhaps one of these mounted in front of the filter could prevent the damage during extreme use... do we really need the coolant filter anyway ???...I'd be happy to find the maker & part number if anyone was interested... Have A GREAT Day, Go Four Wheel'in !!!!! WAM

I've only been using 50/50 water and prestone. Should I be using coolant additives?

I just ran a hose from one connector to the other. Totally bypassed the filter. Hopefully the part will come in next week.

Where is the water filled neck located? After I installed the piece of hose to replace the melted filter, I went on an 70km run and the bike ran fine so I'm assuming mine is OK. The good thing about all this is that the bike is only 3 month old and still under warranty so I shouldn't have to pay for anything yet.

newbeatle, we don't need the strainer. I checked mine again after a year, nothing was in there.

kawidan the fill neck is under the cover in front of the handlebars. The cap fits on it.
