Looking to replace the stock tires on my 2000 Prairie 4X4 and need some help. Looking for a good all around tire for mostly trail riding, some mud, and maybe some rock climbing. Want something that my 400 will handle and that will fit my stock rims. What size can my 400 handle and what will fit on my stock rims? Thanks

 

prairieman2000, The brand of tire is really up to you. I would recomend you get a good 6 ply tire, you can almost always go up 2 '' in height. With a 400 a Mudlite might be a tire you would like, it is a little lighter weight than most so it wont take away as much power as others, I have heard many good things about them. If I remember corectly the 2000 400 had larger dia wheels on the front than the back but dont remember the size right off hand, I do know it came with 11'' wide in the back so I dont think you will need to go any wider in rear since it is fulltime 4wd. If you change size at all I would only consider 1'' taller and maybe wider in front one size. If you look at your stock tires it will give a number like 25x10x12 this means your tire is 25'' tall, 10'' wide, and mounted on a 12'' dia rim. Post your current size and more people can help with suggestions.

 

My stock tires are 25X11X10 in the rear and 25X8X12 in the front. My stock rims are 12X6.0 in the front and 10X8.5 in the rear. What size can I put on my stock rims? Thanks again

 

The only mudlite tires I found that will fit on my stock rims are the identical size of my OEM tires. Should I just go with those or do I have any other options? Correct me if I'm wrong, I need 12" diameter tires on the front and 10" diameter tires on the rear. I found Blackwater tires that I think might fit my stock rims, they are 26X8X12 front and 26X12X10 rear. The rear Blackwater tires are 1" wider than my original rims, will they work on my rims? You are correct, you have a 12" in front and 10" in rear so that is established. Next if you want to go with 26" that would fit fine also. As far as width goes alot of people go with 10s in front and 12 in rear, but this depends on the type of tire you get. Some tires have big side lugs that wouldnt leave enough room in the back. so you need to see how much clearance you have back there. I would look into putting a 26x10x12 in front. I know they are available in most tire brands, but one determining factor will be if you can get a 26'' tire made for a 10'' wheel if not it might leave you stuck with 25''. Otherwise 26x10x12 front and 26x12x10 rear.

 

I did find that I could put 27" mudlite tires on it. The size would be 27X10X12 in the front and 27X12X10 in the rear. Will my 400 handle these and will they have enough clearance? Thanks

 

personally, I'd ditch the stock steel rims anyway, then you could go with 12" aluminum rims all the way around...I did this to my wifes 300 Prairie, & she took 2 first places in mud bogs last year beating lots of men on bigger quads... you'd be suprised how much power your stock steel wheels are sucking up... prairieman2000, They should fit ok, but the concern I would have is with a 400 those 27'' tires are going to drain alot of power. dont get me wrong, the 2000 400s have alot of power and are probably the most reliable bikes out there. (my brother has one and loves it) but even alot of people with the 650s dont want to go much bigger than the 26'' because of the power loss. If you really think you need that extra inch (which is actually only .5'' of clearance) then this should work fine, but I would really consider staying with 26". just my 2cents.

we have 27"mudlites on are 1997 paririe 400 and they are great. you will notice
a little bit of power loss. Most of the things you did before in high, you wil need
to do in low now(rock climing,mugging etc). They ride great on the trail and we
didn't notice much top end loss. I think you will enjoy the mudlites, i know we do.
We went with new itp steel 12" rims in the back 27x10x12 front and 27x12x12 rear.
