i thought that too when my prairie did that. but it ended up being a simple raising of the idle and it's cured.

jw-- not familiar with RAISING the idle to get better shifting. I have have to LOWER it, though. Oh well, that is easy enough to try. It'll take 3 secs. to do it! Try the idle speed adjustment first.

The first week I had the bike, I had the same problem. The dealer raised the idle.
Now the bike shifts like a charm.

my experience has been:

if it grinds goin into gear- lower idle

if it wont go withouth a little throttle - raise idle

hope this helps.

The idle can be too high and too low and both would effect the shifting. I would check for slippage in low or reverse to see if you need to adjust your linkage shifter

What kawi650 is referring as slippage is if you are in low gear, and you hear a "knocking" or "grinding" sound from your sub transmission when you go down a hill or when you slow down. If so you need a shift linkage adjustment.
However, FisherDude, this does not seem to be you problem.

Noroc has this adjusment on his help page.

I guess it could be discribed as jumping out of gear too. Also some 650's need their gear shifter grinded down a bit but you should be ok on and 03 I think it's only on some 02s.
