'03 650 Prairie won't start
 

Well, here's a question. First off I have about 28 days left on the warranty so that is good.

It's been running fine until now. It started up and but I needed to use the choke and it's 70 degrees out. Anyways as soon as I took the choke off it died and that was it. Won't start. Just turns over and over. I changed plugs but same thing. Yes, the fuel valve is on.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img] Anyone got any ideas. You can smell the gas after cranking it for a little while so it seems to be getting fuel.

Anything before I call the dealer for an appointment.

Here is where I am at.

I put some fuel directly in the carbs and it starts and dies. I checked the line from the tank and it pumps. I checked the line after the fuel shutoff and it pumps. I drained fuel out of the carbs and it looks good. I am just not getting fuel into the carbs somehow. Is there a filter in there somewhere? I'm going to drain the carbs and then turn it over and see if any fuel gets back into them.

Before you tear it apart you can try the pull start if it starts right up nice (choke off) and easy then tell the dealer to fix your carbs it's under warrenty.

What's the difference starting it with the electric vs. the pull start? If it doesn't start with electric and turns over why would it start with the pull. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif[/img]

Well I opened the drain and turned it over and I have fuel coming out of the drain. Hmmm.... [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif[/img] If I put fuel right into the carbs it will start and die. I have fuel getting into the carbs enough to go out the drain but it won't fire. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif[/img] Anyone, anyone......

Dont know if it will solve the cause of your problem but if you take out a spark plug and turn it over a few times with it removed it will get rid of the flooded condition it may have.

Also did you check to see where the pilot screws are set on the carbs? or if they are both still there, its been known for them to vibrate all the way out.

I did pull the plugs and turn it over and put in new plugs. No go. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif[/img]

I haven't checked the pilot screws, I will do that next as well as the choke spring and then the jets.

I have fuel pressure so the pump is good.

I have fuel to the carbs.

When turning over fuel comes out of drain line.

I think I will check the choke spring next and then the jets if that's not it.

Oh well, I needed to take a deeper look into it anyway.

Dude,

Pull your float bowl, pull out your main jets and clean them out with an air hose. They probably have a ton of crap in them.
I've seen this cause ATV's to not start. Also, drain all your gas out and put fresh new gas in (including the gas in the bowls)

You need spark, gas and air to run an engine. I'm sure you've got air.....

If you've got spark, pull the plug after turning it over for a while.....is it wet? It better be, otherwise you're not getting fuel into the cylinder.
If you're getting fuel, then your gas is likely bad (water, etc....)

Make sure you're floats aren't stuck too. When trying to start it, tap on the side of the float bowls with the handle end of a medium size screwdriver or small rubber mallet.
Don't get carried away, you're just trying to shake loose the floats. (I really doubt it's this, as both bowls would have to be stuck shut....but you never know).

PS - If it is your jets that are clogged, then I'd suggest installing and inline fuel filter.
