Default Recoil

I had a problem with my recoil on my P650 a couple of days ago. I pulled on the recoil to see how hard it was to start the quad, well the recoil did not suck the rope back in. Earlier I was stuck in water up to my seat for about 30 seconds. When I brought it home I removed the recoil and it was damp. I let it sit out in the sun for a couple of hours and it worked good as new. I noticed the gasket on the recoil is broken so it will need to be replaced some time.

Just a lookout for others, its nothing major but can be serious if you need to pull start it because of a dead battery. I'm sure after a while the motor heat would dry it out but I tried to pull it about 30 min after I swamped it.

Bert,

I took mine apart and added a washer to space the rotating part out. Now
mud or sand won't keep it from recoiling. I too, ordered a gasket, but haven't put it on, it will get wet anyway, through the rope hole. It gets
wet, but it still works.

The washer is a good idea, I'll have to try that, I have a rear rack with a stereo system, before I started pulling the fuse, the battery would run low if I let the "poor" thing sit too long...previously, I had done some mud bog races, & of course the recoil didn't work the first time I needed it...now I also keep a pair of jumper cables in the rear box as well... I tried washing the recoil out, spraying with lube etc, nothing seemed to help... thanks for the spacer idea, I'll give it a try, I think NYROCK has something about the recoils mentioned on his website ... Have A GREAT Day, Go Four Wheel'in !!!!! WAM

My 02 didnt have a gasket on it to start with. But I did have the same problem, I used waterproof grease to fix mine. But the washer sounds a bit less messy. A friend of mine put a small drain hole in the bottom of his. He said, "its already got a hole in the top so whats one in the bottom going to hurt" I guess this makes since.

It sorta makes sense but the top hole has a plug on it the bottom hole on your friends recoil does not. Tell him to put a plug in it.

They already have a hole in the bottom from the factory for drainage.

The recoil has a hole in the bottom? Why even try to seal it off then? I'll have to look for a hole in my recoil, I didn't see one when I took it off last time. Still going to do the washer trick, hate to get stranded in the bush because of a damp recoil.

TriumphDude

What size washer did you add? Today when I went to the dealer I noticed that the 03 P650 seem to have a different recoil cover and a different handle. The handle was a lot smaller and it seem to fit a lot better on the cover. I think it would of do a better job of stopping water and mud from getting in.

It was just a thin washer that fit the diameter of the ring it sat in, with a hole big enough for the screw to go through. You just need to space it out a little, to keep sand/mud from making it hang. Not too
technical.
