Default Sled Head new to quadding. Help...

Whats up? I am a total sled head, mostly mountain riding. I am now quadding on my new KFX 400. Awesome quad!!

What are some of first things you do to a quad. I have Bear Claw rear tires, they work waaaayyyy better than stock. Skid plates and thats about it.

I've noticed guys talking about snorkel kits, K&N filters, slip ons, full exhaust etc.....

What about jetting? Are exhausts worth it?

Any help would be great, thanks.

Welcome!

What kind of riding will you be doing (dunes, mountain singletrack, MX)???

The stock 400 probrably has enough to offer any new rider (stock).

You may want to get used to that 1st.

Otherwise what mahnster said.

How does it feel to have 1/4 of the hp that you are used to???? (compared to a mountain sled).

ride safe...

If you had a KFX 700 you could tune the clutch.

welcome.
Few suggestions:
1st; Buy the Alba Racing intake kit. Consists of a mounting flange(stock filter mount leaves room for problems, not a clamp style), K&N Filter (better breathing), and a Outerware (keeps small particles out of filter). Adjust jetting as needed. Depending on your elevation. If you are not running in a lot of water, remover air box lid. Many of us on here can help you with jetting recommendations. Just provide your elevation, airbox mods, and wether you have a pipe or not.
2nd: If you don't want to dro $300-$500 on a exhaust, you can modify the stocker if you are handy with a dremel and a dril. I can tell you how we did one. It ran pretty good, not quite as good as apiped, but close. Has a distinctive bark.
2nd : Buy a pipe. Get any one just not a Cobra or a DG. I think you can tell the difference in a full system vs. just a silencer. But silencer only works good too. I have a LRD, great quality, I am satisfied, but I know alot of people say the same about White Brothers, Yoshimura, CT, DMC, Trinity, FMF, HMF, and our vendor on herre MBRP.
3rd : Ride it fast.
Feel free to ask any questions. I have a Suzuki z400( a KXF Clone) for theo (the old lady) and my Bro in law has on for his wife too. We have done alot of "r&d"....lol

Thanks guys!! I think the first thing I will do is 13t front sprocket. Then exhaust, CT or Yosh, I am leaning towards the Yosh.

Hey Bing, I am already used to the power. I think it has great power! I just need a little more!

Sandneck, I ride in western Canada, mountains to flatlands, Elevation 2000' - 4500' Could you give me an idea on jetting for these conditions with and without the pipe.

Any little tricks that could make my quad better!! Bring them on!!

I would say your stock jetting would work great until you take the lid off, get a k&n, pipe, but when you do, about a 147-150 main should work. I have seen different pilots in them from the factory, don't worry about it (or the needle), unless it has a hesitation or stumble in the mid range, I bet you wont. If you do ask.
Have fun!
