Please, wear a helmet!
Sorry to hear about the accident, but glad your son is going to pull through. That has got to be one of the scariest things to happen to a parent.
My helmet has saved me more than once - I flew off the machine in a gravel pit and landed on my face. The faceguard section of the helmet was just about ripped off the main part of the helmet, but I only got a couple of scratches.

Shotgun-- I am sorry to hear of your son's accident. Here's to a complete, speedy recovery.....
BTW-- I hit my head, falling off the V-Force 2 weeks ago, had a head ache for 2 days.....could have been WAY worse without a lid. I buy only SNELL foundation, and D.O.T. approved helmets.

I ride with about 7or 8 guys and nobody wears a helmet, I just recently started riding with a dirt bike around some trails out here and he wears his religiously and also with full body guards, boots, etc...
It took one small roll down a 50 foot sinkhole with my 700 lb atv chasing me all the way down to realize that is only takes one time, one slip up, one false move and you'll never have the opportunity to ride again, hell may not even be able to come to this great website and BS with all these fine folks.
Started 3 weeks ago and hopefully will never stop...............................wearing a helmet!!!

Guys, be careful what you wish for! I see references to mandatory helmet laws and get nervous. Lets leave it to the individual otherwise the next thing you know it will be mandatory to ride below 10 mph or not at all.
Shotgun, I'm sorry to here about your son. With all the things I went through with my kids, believe me I understand completely, but please tell these guys to keep it personal. Lets regulate our own households rather then ask the fed to do it for us.
If I choose to wear a brain bucket fine. If I choose not to, let it be my choice. By the way, WE are responsible for our kids until they reach the age of concent. Make your own rules, Please.

Dangerous, I can sort of see what you're saying about leaving it up to the individual. In a perfect world, that might make sense, but in this world we always have the greenies chasing us looking for anything to help make ATV enthusiasts look bad. It is horrible to read "Man killed while riding ATV" in a newspaper. Not just for the family of the man, but for the man's friends, other ATV enthusiasts, and of course the greenies sitting around collecting these articles so they can try to shut down our trails. Maybe you don't have these problems yet where you live, but trust me, they will be coming eventually. Snowmobiles are already having trouble with the National Parks (namely, Yellowstone and Grand Teton) and here in New York there are often meetings held to close down this land, or that land, or prevent new land from being opened to ATVs. If people all wear helmets, it will cut back the number of deaths/serious injuries that the greenies will use as leverage. Also, I see ATVs go racing by on the road with a rider wearing no helmet (this may sound prejudice, but it seems to always people from downstate or New Jersey...not "up" on the whole ATV thing yet...up at their summer homes) and can't help but to think, "well everybody who saw that and owns land is going to think twice about opening it up to ATV trails." An ATV enthusiast in proper safety gear gives us all a good name. Sorry about rambling, but this has been bugging me a lot this summer. *Winter Rules*
P.S. SHOTGUN - Glad to hear that your son is going to be ok. I'm sure he'll learn from his mistake.
