Default Prairie pulley removal

I started pulling my belt drive apart so that I can re-shim my belt and put the black spring in. My problem is that I cant get the nut off to remove the driven pulley. I tried using a breaker bar with an extension wedged in the frame and can not get it that way. I actually think I may have put the extension through the one flat piece in the corner of the frame. I"m going to get a impact wrench tonight to try it with. my questions are 1. How much torque does it need to pull the nut off? I was told the one I am borrowing is not extremely powerful, but am hoping it will be enough. 2. Does the pulley need to be held at all when using the impact or does it just give it such a quick jolt that you dont need anything hold in? Thanks guys.

You should hold the pulley to prevent it from spinning if it does spin. Mine didn't. You would only need to uses gloves to hold it while the impact is going, if it spins. Might try putting it in gear to stop it.

You never know how much torque it takes to get stuff off without testing it. Just put it back at 69ft-lb. It always takes a lot more torque to get tthings loose. Make sure the shaft is greased to prevent the pulley from rusting on.

nyroc,
The impact I"m getting probably only has like 250lbs of torque max. I'm just wondering if that should be enough or if I"m gonna need something stronger. Thanks for your help. I really appreciate all the time you put in your website. It makes things alot easier for me and tons of other people I'm sure.

That should do it, that is all the torque mine has. Try not to use any heat.

Sounds good. Thanks for the heat warning, I was gonna give it a quick shot with the torch to hopefully loosen it a little bit. But I'll wait to use that as a last resort then. If I get this off today then I'll order my spring right away. I'm going to be up your way in a couple weeks. I have some family I'm visiting in Victor. I know its pretty close to Rochester. Thanks again for the help.

I got the nut off, but didnt take the belt off first by accident. I cant get the pulley pushed all the way back on to get it off normal. What is the best way to get the belt off now? Thanks again. I just put the order in for my black spring. Should be here early next week I hope.

I personally don't like the black spring. It robs power on top end. It supposedly is to prevent belt slippage with large tires installed. I may try the red primary spring before going back to stock secondary. I just need air tools!

The trails I ride on I cant usually do over 60. So the loss in top end is no big deal. But can anyone tell me how to get the belt off after removing the nut on the pulley?

Nevermind, I just went down to the garage and put the pulley back on and pulled the belt off. Now I just have to make the spring compressor and wait for my spring.

Alright, so I got the pulley off and tonight I got the pieces and made the spring compressor(excellent, cant beat it for $3.96). I got it apart and I have one shim in there which seems thick. Would I just be best to go and buy all the shims and hold on to them for the future? I was just looking at getting them from ron ayers, but its not worth the $7 shipping. I'll just run down to my dealer and get them. I found it great when I talked to the mechanic on the phone to see if they have them in stock and he told me I wouldnt be able to do it and to just bring it in. Hmmmm, I'm still inder warranty so maybe I'll get them from the other dealer so mine doesnt get ticked I'm doing work myself. I'm really enjoying ripping this thing apart. I want to take more apart. I thakn everyone again, you all make this so much easier to do.
