EPI pink VS. HPD plain. My opinion.

After having the EPI pink in my V for a few months I've found myself wondering if a stiffer more aggressive spring would fit my needs better for riding mostly high mountain trails with the occaisional drag race.
This morning the UPS man brought the plain spring to my door and it was quickly put into place and off I went. I first noticed that the initial engagement of the plain was really high compared to the pink. It wasn't like it was throwing me back when it grabbed, but it WAS much higher. I didn't think it would be a problem until I got a scare during my test run down a steep hill. I used to be able to blip the throttle to engage the clutch to slow me down, now you really have to stab the gas to do it. I'm sure in time I would get used to it, but it was still a scarry situation.
I did several runs from a dead stop to top speed and I do have to say the plain pulls harder than the pink. You dont really have to worry about the front end raising up when you don't want it to because the tires break traction right from the start. For drag racing I would definately recommend the HPD plain over the pink.
Tomorrow morning I'm going to put the pink back in and leave it there. Although the V is quicker with the plain spring, I feel the pink is better for all round use. Much easier for tight woods cruzing and still fast enough to keep the occaisional raptor behind you.
If I'm going to a place where I know there will be drag racing, its a quick 10 minute swap to the plain spring. Heck, for $20 a pop, you can't go wrong with either one.

If you want a drag race spring, go ahead and skip the plain and get the hpd silver/gold. I have both. Increased stall is very manageable for drag racing. It could be a little awkward in the woods.

Thanks for the info. I never tested any HPD springs. You should have tried the EPI Bright/Green. For a little more performance the EPI Red is excellent. Im not sure what that HPD plain spring engages at but the EPI B/G engages at 1920rpms and the Red engages at 2150. For comparisons a stock spring engages at 1270 and your Pink engages at 1520rpms.
These engagements are on my P650. Your V700 may engage higher or lower but the difference in egagement from spring to spring will still be very very close to the same as above.

I don't suppose you could give me some tips or instructions for swapping in a pink spring? I haven't been in to this auto trans before. I keep hearing it's easy, but some guidence would be great.

It's really simple. After you remove the plastic cover, there will be 2 pulleys with a belt going around them. Remove the center retaining bolt on the driven pulley"the pulley towards the front of the engine". Remove the bolt by turning it clockwise "reverse threads". After removing the retaining bolt, remove all the little bolts holding on the plate. Once you take off the plate you will see the spring inside. Replace the spring and make sure you tighten everything up.

It is quite easy.
Remove the black clutch cover and connection to the top snorkel
Then take off the center nut on the primary cover. 20 or 22 mil socket and REVERSE thread
Then remove the 8 (?) bolts that hold the cover on. remove and install the spring.
Install the 8 bolts and tighten on a cross pattern like you are installing a tire and rim on a truck.
Install the center nut.
I do not have the torque specs in my head but you will find the 8 bolts are light, about 5-8 ft-lbs I would call a dealer for the specs or PM me and I will look them up tonite.
Also I found that a hockey stick shaft works great for inserting into the primary to hold it while you take off / install the large center bolt

I just found a good illustration on Nyroc's web site Install primary spring on P650 for the Prarie... it sounds very similar... I'm gonna get a pink spring and try it out.

center bolt torque spec is 67 foot pounds....19 mm socket
small bolts are 113 inch pounds.....10 mm socket

Mike, you broke any yet? I did good,...none broke. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img] I think I just got the "feeling" for torque,....just like my "finger on the belt deflection" measurement.
