A local dealer near me has a brand new 2002 Lakota sport he says he will make me a deal on. I will be purchasing it for my 14 year old son who will be using it for some fairly aggressive recreational trail riding but no racing. Who knows I might even get on it every now and again. What is your general opinion on this atv? Any input would be helpful....thanks in advance.

i'd say go for it if it is a 'good deal', im not sure what a good deal is right now but 6 months ago or so i could have got a new one for around 2300 or so i believe it was... dont quote me, cause im not too positive =] i've never owned a lakota but had a buddy that bought one in 02 and was cool for the basic tral riding/basic riding use. i've road it a few times and liked it for the price. i just got conned into buying a v-force instead or i would be riding a 02 lakota right now, hehe

The Mojave is a very good bike, I have one but thats B.S. about it being better. I love my Lakota. I have lots of 4-wheelers and it is still my favorite. The lakota is so much fun that when me and all of my buddys go riding they argue over who gets to ride it. And they have raptors, 400ex's, warriors, and a Ds650, and all of them fight over it. I cant get them off of it. They all spend thier time doing tricks on it. Like wheelies. cat walks, and it is the best bike I have ever seen for doing stoppies. If its set up right, the Lakota is unbeatable in the trails. And as for tricks, its unbeliveable. The Lakota is always setting on top of the hill when we are still falling down it. I can put a beginer or a pro on it and they can keep up with enyone, and even pass them. My lakota is not stock tho. Go to a post called "Lakota performance kit" and you can see a list of my mods. I just cant stop dumping money into it , its just so much fun. I went to a dealer this weakend and they had several Lakota's thier out the door for $3200. I paied $4000 for mine a year ago. I may go buy another one. The mojave is still $4200 and its definatly not worth $1000 to have a mojave insted of a lakota. Lakota's RULE!

I gotta laugh murphyslaw, my buddies also call(ed) my Lakota "the goat". Because it climbs things it shouldn't. Maybe one of them read one of ur posts. Anyway... I bought a new 2002 Lakota in March of this year for $3500.00. It was my first quad, and I have no complaints about it. It's not as fast as my new quad, but it wasn't slow, especially for a beginner. For a 14 yr old, it'll probably be perfect. I did have to replace the flimsy stock swingarm skid plate, but that was it. After I got used to it, I gave it to my girlfriend. You see, I'm a big guy, and the Lakota hauled my butt around no problem, but not with my girlfriend on the back. I couldn't leave her behind all the time, so I bought a new quad for myself. My point is, if it was junk, I'd never have given it to my girlfriend. It's easy and fun to ride, and that's what matters.

I would probably get a 330 kit insted of just getting a cam. The cam alone wont do much, but the 330 kit is very fast. I dont have one yet, but a month ago I want riding at a local place and thier was a kid on a Lakota that must of weighed a hundred pounds and he was beating 400ex's in a 200' foot drag. After talking to him and showing him my bike, he wanted to ridemy kota and he let me ride his. It was'nt just fast, it was damn fast! I was imprestat how much torque this thing had. The only thing I havent done to my bike is the 330 kit. But thats definatly the next thing I do.
$280 for the whole kit from Four Stroke Tech. Worth every penny.

My intentions are for the cam to go WITH a 330 kit! Not just cam alone.
So does the "kit" from FST come with the cam..... or is it optional? I'm also doing the larger carb.

No the cam does not come with the kit, but its my understanding that thier is not much that can be done for the cam. I was told that the cam is about as good as it gets. I dont even know who makes one that will work.
The cam in the kota is "hotter" than the one in the Bayou so thier might be someone that could make a new cam to get a little more power. If you find one, let me know, I want one.
But with the kit you will want to do the clutch also.
The mojave carb on the kota is awsome!
