Mojave ???'s...installed KN air filter
#1
Just installed an KN air filter on a stock 03 mojave. Stock exhaust still, .... Pulled the whole airbox and got a clamp on KN filter mounted straight to the carb.. You think I need to rejet? And if so what size?..... Also when I pulled off the airbox theres a small curved rubber hose going to the engine, do i just plug this up, im assuming this is emissions stuff for the gas vapors. I havent had a chance to get out and ride yet. Wondering if just turning up the carb screw will work. Anyone previously done just this mod to their mojave?

Ok Mojave man, I'm one of them guys that used to race a mojave in the 80's know everything about them, you will need to jet two sizes up...next raise the needle up one clip, next go to auto zone or kracken auto parts they have these real small filters like K&N but real small it will fit on the motor were the hose is or you can get a PVC Valve and stick it on their, check my profile I tell about my Mojave days...Had a GrandNational man it was Fast I miss it, they truely are a great quad, buy you a new set of frt and rear shocks from shock works and it is way better than most quads out their...Still one of the most high tec motors out their... Ooh yea get rid of the factory pipe or drill out the baffle you will gain 4hp just putting a cobra pipe on that thing cost about $99

Do not plug the crankcase vent pipe. Install a hose on it and run it to a small filter up high on the frame somewhere. I would start with two jet sizes up like husker suggested but I would not be surprized if only one jet size up is needed. The needle on the mojave carb does not have a clip adjustment. You can get shims if you need them to put under it but I think you will not need to fool with that. Just get the main jet right.

Your carbs probably had jet kits in them. The jet kits come with a needle and clip. All stock needles from 89 up that I have ever seen have no clip adjustment. The jet is made with the washer on top.

I think I'm the one that sold you the K&N, if your interested in a good pipe I have one of those too(actually I have 2)
1 is 10 years old DG w/no spark arrester and very loud!$20
the other is about 3 months old DG with the supertrapp disc spark arrester $75
Both are the aluminium DGs with the larger head pipes.
Jeff
And to other fellas above,I never had to rejet my mojave with the K&N and either DG pipe.
Had 132 main jet and 35 pilot jet stock but alot of the mojaves came with main jets as low as 128 and pilot jets as low as 32.
I was just lucky I guess, it ran better the more things I did to it.

Did you ever race against Jackie Meadows or Charlie Shepard when they used to race the mojaves and the mocats(mojave with the tecate engine before the tecate 4 came out)? They were pretty fast riders, infact I think I heard Meadows was racing again.

Haywood, I races one time in a county fair that Charlie was racing in it, yes he smoked everyone by at least a 1/2 track, thats where I got the idea and went to a step to build my GrandNational Mojave, it was so impressive when he pulled up in his Team Green Trailer just when he fired that Mojave up it made the rest of us feel like what in the crap are we doing here, it was all a mind game many of times not sure if you've ever raced but any that has knows that, That bike he had looked spotless you can tell they really took good care of them and him. The first heat I raced in with him he got the hole shot and threw so much dirt it hurt, man them were the days...I miss them, married now and 37 yrs old I'm a bit to old but I still love them days...
