Default Someone please tell me the truth!!

I am being told so many different things by as many different "professionals" im starting to think they are all just a bunch of used car sales men. My question to them was pretty simple. What will give me the most bang for my buck, speaking of performance enhancements on my KFX400. I told them I didn't want to dump a thousand into my bike and not be impressed by the outcome. Well guess what folks. 1K later and I am exactly where I didn't want to be. I have a new pipe and new silencer a new intake set up and my carb rejeted. Sure my bike sounds good now but I doubt its substantially faster than stock.

So now im 1k into my bike wondering what the next step is. My local speed tech tells me I need $500 worth of head work and a new cam, he swears that will do the trick. Another speed tech says don't bother with the head work and cam unless you buy a $450 carb and a $400 ignition module. So now I have two "professionals" with to completely different approaches that both will run me approximately 1k and if you ask them the 1k would be wasted if I don't do it the way they think I should. From my point of view its a lose lose. I can gamble either way or spend 2k and just go all out. There has to be a simple answer. A single bolt on or two that will take advantage of my intake/exhaust and give me a noticeable power increase. So help me please because I don't trust my local shops anymore.

thats an awfull lot of money for what you have 2 things the 400's suffer from is stock cam and carb 39mm fcr is the carb of choice $500 or so i believe hot cams are around $175 or so try messing with your jetting for right now it might be to lean thats why you didn't see a big power increase also compresion is low on those compared to drz-klx 400 dirt bike.

Your best bet is to call Mickey Dunlap at Four Stroke Tech. He has been doing this for many many years and I and many of us trust him, his work, and his opinions. I'm sure he can lead you in the right direction. Call between 3-6 pm eastern time 814-842-6159.
My two cents since I own a KFX 400 as well as my V Force is you should have spent that grand in the beginning and got the V Force. I know for a fact that the stock new V is faster than a jetted 400 with pipe and silencer. The 400 is a great quad, but I just love my V Force!!!

I was about to pull the trigger on a trade in for the V force when the machinist at the dealer caught wind of my plans. He pulled me aside and told me not to waist my time. He was very convincing and very aggressive. That's all beside the point now as I have already started spending money on my KFX and im not good at stop loss investments. I actually prefer the ride of my KFX over any of the other bikes I have tried i.e. banshee, raptor, and yfz450 so im not completely bummed out. I just want to get more power out of my bike so I can keep up with the crowd next time I go to Glamis.

A third philosophy has arose. Carb and Cams.. What do you think about that? Now I have heard equal parts Cam, Carb, Head Work & Ignition. But nobody has mentioned any single mod its always a combination of two. One thing I know my bike has problems with is the stock rev limit. I hit it quick and I hit it often especialy in 2nd gear.

I dont think I am lean. The plug looks good and I dont run hot no matter how hard I push it.

My friend put a dial-a-jet on his KFX and his sisterinlaws Z-400. It made quite an improvment in power at all rpm's. It cost like $70.00 or near that.

PS. We have scratched our heads for weeks trying to figure out how it works and have no clue.

They run adds in the atv and dirt bike mags.

I just typed in "dial-a-jet" into my puter and found 2 pages of stuff about them.

Make sure that you type "dial-a-jet with the - around the "a".

Thanks I found it. Its a TPI product and it sounds to good to be true. I would have to hear some more customer reviews before I tried it out.

a friend down in Cali who rides a lot of diff altitudes put one on and swore by it. He almost talked me into one. I still might give it a try... esp with a 2 carb setup. it's spozed to smoothe things out. Most ppl who buy em love them.
