Default Tapping Noise

I recently checked/adjusted the valves on my 650 and still have a tapping noise that I thought may have been valve tappet noise. Has anyone had trouble with the cam chain not keeping tension possibly making this noise? BluRock

Blurock, are you sure you adjusted your valves properly? When you set your valves, did you put the timing mark in the proper position and then see if your rockers were loose before you adjusted the valves? One thing the manual does not tell you is that the timing mark can be in the right position, but your valves will be open. You have to turn the crank counterclockwise one full turn and line up your mark again for the valves to be closed (that is where you want them to be when you adjust them). I don't know how much mechanical experience you have, so forgive me if I'm stating the obvious!!! I overlooked this the first time I set my valves and I thought I had buggered it up bad when I first fired it up after I set my valves!!

I'm sure you checked but, are you sure it is in the engine and not the primary. Mine had a Knock/tapping noise. I beleive it is the wear shoes in the primary. In the process of changing them now. I didn't have the tools to take the clutch apart so I took the clutch to the dealer. Of course they put the wrong size shoes in the first time so now I am waiting for them to get the parts.

10-4 on the proper TDC. There will be no clearance if not at TDC, ecspecially as close as the settings are on the 650 (.010 mm). MDG, Im not too sure on what you're referring to as the 'Primary'. Are you referring to the primary drive? Either way, it sure sounds like it may be a cam chain that is not remaining tight from the tensioner. BluRock

Blurock, MDG has a good point. There is a lot of tapping noises that come from your primary clutch.

Yea the primary drive/clutch. It only taps at low RPM's and is louder on the CVT side of the quad. Just a thought. Something to check before you go for the timing chain. The gap between the wear shoes and guides is supposed to be more then 0 and less then .0047 when turning the clutch clockwise and measuring the shoe that the arrow on the front of the clutch points too. Mine was at .006 and made a real noticeable tap. I do have a snorkel so that did amplify the noise.

After the dealer "fixed it" the gap was .01. That’s why it's still in the shop.

I hope that is your problem. Be a lot easier to fix.
Good luck.

My 650 has had a tapping noise coming from the right side of the clutch housing. It is very noticeable when I first start it, but when I give it a little throttle it goes away. It seems to be quieter after I drive it a while and it gets warmed up.It's made this noise ever since I brought it home.

Thanks, guys for your replies. I've been having problems reading the latest at ATVConnection.com but my problems have since been resolved. An additional note on the noise, it seems to be more prevalent in a more, "no-load" engine status. That is why I thought it may be the chain. There's obviously a lot that may be making this noise and it may not be anything to worry about. However, I would like to correct anything that may be causing this noise. There is no problem with power, starting, or anything else, just the noise. I've read many of the postings on this Forum and consider myself to be lucky with the drive. I have over 2,300 miles and have never had the cover off the converter. Starting to have an annoying squeal taking off but it stops right away. Maybe it's time to look inside there. I take the CVT cover off all the time to clean the clutches, and adjust/check the belt. I have 700 miles on mine and I smoked the belt at the nationals. I'm putting a 700 belt on if I ever get my clutch back. You have 2300 miles and haven't touched it. Maybe I need to put it back together and just leave it alone. After two weeks the dealer finaly got the parts he ordered for my clutch. Problem is he ordered valve springs instead of wear shoes. Maybe the third time will be a charm.
