No Shim for Belt tension Adjustment?
#1
Hi all.
I need to adjust the Belt tension of my Kawa KFX700. I discovered that my Driven pulley has only 1 shim. To properly adjust the Belt tension, I need to remove this shim. Do you know if the Driven pulley can properly work even without any shim (without any damage risk)?

there are 4 thicknesses of shims, most likely you have 1 thicker one... look for a number stamped on it, & head to the shop for a thinner one... I purchaed all 4 so I would always have the right size...
in theory, you don't need a shim, however if your belt is so thin that you really don't need a shim, then it will be out of spec, & should be replaced...

I'm running without a shim, just took it out last week. Newbeatle may be right, saying the belt is bad, but I find no signs of damage so I'm going to run it a few more hunder miles before I replace it.

I bought ALL 4 shims, so that I would only have to go to my bench, rather than the dealer for one! WWW.buykawasaki.com has the part#, and price. They are around $5EA.
Newbeatle's observations are correct. If the belt is STILL out of spec without ANY shim(s), then the belt(most likely) is worn out. Do check the sheaves(pulley halves) for scoring/wear/pits.

I'm not saying anyone here would make this mistake but a while back I had a guy ask me about reshimming his clutch as he had done it himself and it didn't help the squeal. I ask him to show me the shim he removed and he promptly produced the thrust washer that sets behind the spring instead of the clutch shim. I helped him pull the clutch back apart, replace the thrust washer and remove 1 of the 2 shims that were in his driven clutch. Put him to the low side of the spec and no more noise.

DANGEROUS... I'm glad you brought that up, as a friend of mine did the same thing... just to clairify, the shims are inbetween the 2 halves of the secondary clutch, & the spring must becompressed & the clip must be removed & the 2 halves of the secondary seperated to get to the shims... if you did not disassemble the secondary, then all you did was remove the washer from the shaft...

One other thing about the shims. I've never bought any because I discovered some rear end pinion shims are the same id and od. I don't remember which they are off hand but I think they were for a Dana 44. I'll have to check out in the shop tomorrow to be sure. Any mechanic that does gear work would be happy to hand you a hand full and they run from .001" up to .090".
