is break-in really all that critical on P 700???
What do yo actually accomplish by not running the throttle over half? My dealer said to ride it as hard as I want but just don't hold it at one constant speed very long. I didn't even know about the break in until I read the manual the other day. So is there a chance that I've skrewed-up my new p 700? Thanks, Rop. p.s. 5hrs. 30mls. on it.

Ride the thing as you intend to ride it for the rest of its life. Wide open throttle won't hurt it, instead it will help. Just don't hold the engine at any constant rpm for an extended period. If you baby it you do more harm than good. Remember, the manufacturer sells parts also.

Dangerous & Customfab (or anyone else), then have you heard if it matters or not if performance exhausts are installed and you re-jet as your breaking in the quad. I've heard you should break it in while it's in "stock" form THEN put the dual exhausts on after. Does it really matter?

ride as hard as you can for the first 20 mi. (the higher pressures help seal the rings to the cylinder walls) also run dino oil for the first 20 mi. then switch to a quality syn. I read a lengthy discussion on this at another web site. the article was written by a mechanic for hondas road race teams.

There are different schools of thought on the break-in proccess. You have heard from the hard break-in crowd. Now you will hear from the other side:
1. No full throttle operation for the first 8 hours riding time, but do not baby it. Run to half throttle at least. Seats in the rings better.
2. Accelerate and decelerate equally during the first few hours. Do not hold at one speed and cruise for any length of time.
3. Use all gears and brakes equally
4. Change the oil & filter at 10 hours, and again at 20 hours. Removes the fine metal chips earlier.
Keeps them out of your bearings.
Wide open throttle break-in may well be the best way to seat rings, but it is hard on bearings, especially
rod bearings, and especially when there are steel filings in the oil. I have read the article on break-in by the
Honda mechanic, and what he says makes sense. But he never mentions the bearings, and he is in the business of repairing engines.
