Special tools for setting belt deflection?

36 miles on my Prairie, and the belt deflection is at 1 1/2 inches! Is that normal for the initial break in? ? Anyway, I was looking through the factory service manual and I saw the special tools that are needed to get the driven pulley apart. I plan to fab the tools myself, I was just wondering if anyone else had done the same, or are they just going to the dealer evry time it's needed.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif[/img]

You can make the spring compressor with a piece of 1/2"x12" threaded rod, a couple of nuts, couple of washers, and a 2" threaded pvc cap. Drill a hole in the top of the cap and cut a notch out of the side and tighten the nuts to compress the spring and use snap ring pliers to take out the ring

Yeah that's a good idea. I bulit my own secondary clutch spring compressor it look's very similar to the factory one. And it is very simple to make and works very good. The choice was easy for me because they are $275.00 plus tax in Canada. Good luck skun [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

You cut a big notch in one side of the cap to get the pliers in, but it's also good to cut a small notch on the other side. That's handy to reach a screwdriver in the back side to work the ring back in place if it is finicky.

If I remember correctly, type in NYROC spring tool, or something to that effect, and search the sites that come up---and if you cant find a link, with pictures and about an 18 page step by step procedure on making the tool and setting deflection, I will e-mail or fax to you

No need to fab anything. You can buy the minor hardware for compressing the spring for ~$4. Then use a socket extension on the 27 pg atv power website (thank you author Nemmeh) to hold the torque of removing or reinstalling the nut.
I made the mistake of buying the tool used to hold the sheave against the nut torque because of the forum talk of air tools, which I don't have. Didn't fit, ~$90, worthless, can't return. No more dealer tools or parts for me if I can avoid it. Man, do they stick it to you.
