Typical Shim on new belt
#2
I don't think every machine is exactly the same.(why not???) You'll have to "trial and error". Some guys like the belt tight - less wear. I'm not sure why anyone would want it loose.

my belt currently has around 3k miles on it & I recently adjusted it with no shims & it squaks horribly & even moves while at idle in H or L (time for a new belt) I wouldnt suggest anyone put in a new blet with no shim at all I did that after about 1500 miles of use & it was way to tight. I realize that all bikes are different & adjustments should be made accordingly, my dealer said stock they generally come with a 1.4mm shim so maybe I'll give 1.0 mm a shot. (still sounds kind of big)

There is no common shim. The belts are (supposely) adjusted/set-up to the unit when assembled at the factory. I bought all 4 shims, and keep 'em in stock. I NEVER am without the correct shim! The are about $5/ea.

Well got the new belt today, threw it on with a 1.0 mm shim & she works perfect.. My deflection is just over 3/4 of an inch, no squeling at idle & no barking on takeoff's..

Uinthas....thats what I did on mine too. From the factory I had one 1.4 shim.I bought them all and tried the 1.0 for starters. It was on the bottom end of spec.SAme result too....this thing takes off MUCH better than it di before.I wanted to get it right since we are headed to HAtfiled/McCoy in 3 weeks.I don't want to be caught by any other guys with manual shift Vinsons thinking they can beat me again

That's pretty much what I figured, factory brings them in with a 1.4 shim & we all know the belt slipping problems from the factory, so I figured either one 1.0mm shim or two .6 mm shims.. Luckily my 1st try paid off
