what size of air compressor should i buy?
#1
i know this is way off topic but i finally have the money to buy my air compressor along with some air tools. i don't want to get a compressor that is any bigger than a 30 or 33 gallon one and not over $300. i just wanna make sure i get one that can run a impact gun, air ratchet and an air drill. what kind of cfm should it put out to run these tools. i noticed that the walmart 30 gallon air compressor is rated at about 3.8 cfm at 90 psi. is this good or should i look for something better. also i was wondering how those oil free compressors are for durability or should i get the one that requires you to add oil. thanks for any input.

Air tools suck alot of air--you can't even run a paint gun off 3.8 cfm--I have a 60 gal 6HP upright , got it for $399 at Harbor Freight. Also have a 30 gal horizontal -- small but has 5HP "V" pump on it . I would rec. oil type-- oilless have cheap plastic piston&liner and they are loud--Hope this helps.....

yep, thats about the size to get... I just bought a Milwaukee 18 volt electric impact, to supliment my other 18 volt tools... makes changing tires at the races much easier, as I can take it where I need it... they claim you can change 36 tires with one battery... the drill & sawzall come in handy as well... I find now, that my compressor is only used for filling up my portable air tank...

Depends what kind of duty you plan for it, some air tools use more air than others. Also makes a diff- 8 lug nuts( truck) then wait , or blast off all 32 with no wait .-- Must decide 110v or 220v ? Check consumption of tool you want to use then how long you want to use them without waiting for air. You V-Force guys know-- " no replacement for displacement" --ha ha some small comps work well ---later--

well 220 v will not work unless i install a 220 v outlet. i see that the biggest blue campbell hausfeld compressor that walmart sells puts out 5.1 cfm at 90 psi and is 26 gallons. home depot sells a red husky compressor that is the same size and out put for that same price($249) or they have a reconditioned husky that is belt drive and not oil less that is 26 gallons and makes 5.8 cfm for $330. i guess if i want durability and quiet running then i guess the last one would be the best. i doubt i can find much bigger than that for 110 v. i don't plan on painting but i plan on using one of those air drills to do the nyroc exhaust mod and my truck has 8 lug nuts per tire so i guess that is the longest duration i would be using any of the air tools. the harbor freight store is like 10 miles from my house and they are having a big sale in march so i may hold out until then. thanks for all the info guys.

Harbor freight is having a big sale in March???!!! they just had one. And they're having one now, and another one tomorrow, and the day after that, etc. I love that place. Some of their tools are cheap but they arent designed for industrial applications. Central Pneumatic or Dewalt? Hmmmmmmm.
Get the biggest one you can afford. The smaller CH units are very loud.
