Belt too tight?
#1
I just put in the EPI black spring and took out all (2) shims. Performance is great but not only does it squeak at idle but it moves also. If you try to hold it in gear with the brake it screams at you. Will this go away with belt wear or do I need to put one of them back in?
The noise doesn't bother me nearly as much as the quad moving.

your shims may be of different thickness, you may want to use the thickest one first, to stop the "surging." I removed my thickest shim, leaving the thinner, but it squeaked and surged. When I swapped out shims leaving the thickest in, it did't squeak or surge, but maintained the low end thrust I wanted. hope this helps.

When i did mine bolth my shims were 1mm in thickness. I went to the dealer and got a .6mm shim and put it back in..... Loosened the belt up just enough. Hooks up real well, squeals just a little at idle but not much, and it doesn't pull as you are describeing...... don't feel to bad i did the exact same thing.

I'm pretty sure you will not be able to put up with either the surge or the noise, especially around other bikes. Did mine 3 times before it was right. Just hump it up and do it again until you're satisfied.

I got lucky, and did mine right the first time. I didn't know that they were set up loose form the factory, and also didn't know that I wasn't supposed to ride in High, at slow speeds, therefore I took a lot of miles off of my belt in the first 36 miles. I took out one of the factory shims, and it set up perfect the first time, according to the factory specs. Mine doesn't squeal or surge, at all.

DaRiot, ride it for 1 hour and the pulling in gear should go away. Mine did that. I never put a shim back in it. I still have no shims.
The squealing at idle takes a lot longer to diminish. But, the belt lasts a long time that tight as long as you don't idle in gear for very long. The belt engagement stay nice and grabby too.
You can put a shim back in, that's not a bad idea. But, you can ride it tight too. Ignore the squealing part and just ride it. But, if the pulling doesn't go away, you should not keep riding it that tight. If you put a shim in, try the thinnest one. Measure yours to make sure they are the thinnest or go buy the thin one.

I can't stand to hear that screech. I sounds like my EX-wife! I like running mine on the low(tighter) side of the deflection spec. It makes me get in there and look for trouble, and lube those helix buttons more often......................................
