Default 650p backfires when rpms come down

heres what i found today. i went up one more size on the jets(162f/165r). i ran it WOT and did a plug check, they were tan. i still had the the back fire. before i left i checked the pilot screws, i turned them to 4f and 4 1/2r, where they were 3 1/4f and 3 1/2r. then on the way home i cracked the airbox lid, i put the 2 rear snap clips under the lid and locked the front down. i seen a great improvement from bottom to mid i only reached 60 mph. i know there was more on the bottom because before i had to pull back on the bars to get the front end up(high gear) now all i have to do is mash it. wheelies were done on pavement were as tires are to bald to do it in the dirt. i didnt even hear the backfire.

I DONT WANT TO RUN WITH THE LID POPPED OPEN. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
I HAVE THE STOCK FILTER, FOR THE 2002 MODEL. SHOULD I UP GRADE TO THE 2003 MODEL?

WHY AM I SO BIG ON THE JETS, WITH THE SAME MODS AS EVERYONE ELSE?
I WOULD LIKE TO RESOLVE THIS BEFORE THE CDI COMES.

Deerchopper,
Here's my impressions...you went up 1 size (made the carbs a little richer) and the problem didn't go away/got a little worse...also, you cracked open the air box (to lean out the carbs a little) and it ran better. Those 2 observations tell me that you went the WRONG WAY with the jetting!!! As I tried to explain above, my opinion (which together with $1.00 will get you a cheap cup of coffee somewhere) is that you need to go DOWN on the main jets to get the A/F ratio correct. I think that cracking the airbox open to make it run better is a perfect indictionation that you are running too rich right now. Just something to think about...good luck.

Happy trails...

Deerchooper - I can't believe that your jets need to be that rich. (158-162) Accurate plug readings are very difficult to get with today's clean burning unleaded fuel, you often don't get the color you expect. All the P650/700's leave the factory with 138-142's and run great, the same machines with similar mods should all end up jettted very closely. Judging by your mods and with the history of jetting that has been built on the forums, you should be at 142-145, 145-148, somewhere in that range. A good running stock 650 will practically die if you crack open the airbox cover just a little bit to lean it out.

hears the deal. i do agrea with you about the air box lid cracked open(lean the carbs out).i went backward today. i installed 145f/147.5r today. IT RAN GOOD. did i do a plug check? NO. why? because i would end up with the same results, need to go bigger. i had the same speed 60mph, that could be because i installed the black spring, which was stated that you would lose 1-2 mph. would it wheelie like i said before? NO. its harder now to even wheelie period.

I THANK ALL OF YOU FOR HELP!
