Default Got a truck question?

Hey, I am looking at buying a woods truck from a buddy. It is a 1979 chevy 3/4 HD and it is full time four wheel drive. Now I have two questions, first what tranny is this, it is a 3 speed automatic and the transfer case is in the same housing as the transmission, and it only has a high and a low selection on it? Is it just a certain model of the turbo 350? And is it possible to convert to a turbo 350 and seperate transfer case so it wasn't full time four wheel drive, would this require different driveshafts? Well what I have found out is it is a seperate transfer case and transmission (sure didn't look like it). It has a np203 transfer case and th350 transmission. But what I need to make it not full time 4wd is a np205 transmission which need a th350 with a 32 spline output shaft. So if I get a th350 with this output shaft and a np205 does anyone know if the driveshafts will work and what a guy has to do to put the linkage in the truck? Thanks again, Seth

You can keep the N.P. 203 case and put a part time kit in it, along with locking hubs. Mile Marker , Superlift and I think Warn all make a kit for this. It does not cost very much, And is easy to install. The biggest difference in the 205 and 203 is 205- gear drive, 203- chain drive .

Yeah, what pistonman said. I read in an Off-Road mag that having full-time 4X4 doesn't add any extra wear or hurt fuel mileage any noticable amount, but that it does make full-lock turning harder. So even just selectable hubs would work.

You can get tons of info on the older Chevy 4x4's @ coloradok5.com If someone on there hasn't done it, it probably can't be done.
