Default Got a truck question?

Hey, I am looking at buying a woods truck from a buddy. It is a 1979 chevy 3/4 HD and it is full time four wheel drive. Now I have two questions, first what tranny is this, it is a 3 speed automatic and the transfer case is in the same housing as the transmission, and it only has a high and a low selection on it? Is it just a certain model of the turbo 350? And is it possible to convert to a turbo 350 and seperate transfer case so it wasn't full time four wheel drive, would this require different driveshafts? Thanks for your help, don't know who else to ask, Seth

Well what I have found out is it is a seperate transfer case and transmission (sure didn't look like it). It has a np203 transfer case and th350 transmission. But what I need to make it not full time 4wd is a np205 transmission which need a th350 with a 32 spline output shaft. So if I get a th350 with this output shaft and a np205 does anyone know if the driveshafts will work and what a guy has to do to put the linkage in the truck? Thanks again, Seth

You can keep the N.P. 203 case and put a part time kit in it, along with locking hubs. Mile Marker , Superlift and I think Warn all make a kit for this. It does not cost very much, And is easy to install. The biggest difference in the 205 and 203 is 205- gear drive, 203- chain drive .

Yeah, what pistonman said. I read in an Off-Road mag that having full-time 4X4 doesn't add any extra wear or hurt fuel mileage any noticable amount, but that it does make full-lock turning harder. So even just selectable hubs would work.

You can get tons of info on the older Chevy 4x4's @ coloradok5.com If someone on there hasn't done it, it probably can't be done.
