How do you check the timing on a P650?

How do you check the timing on a P650?
I have the service manual, and it says to remove the bung on the recoil. I pulled the bung, and I see the marks, but how do you do it without the engine blowing out all the oil?
I soaked the fender with oil at idle for the couple of seconds the bung was out. I couldn't imagine doing it at 5500 RPM!!!!!
