Default Prarie 650 - Loud drive train popping noise - slip?

Need a little advice - NYROC - you heard of this one?

When pulling uphill on my 650 I get a substantial 'metal to metal pop' like a gear hitting the housing wall. Sounds like something in the drive train (directly forward of or directly underneath fuel tank (can't tell if it's from the front diff. or tranny) is slipping. Once I noticed a definate slight hesitation when this happened -almost like a slip in the gearing. The only mod I've done is to shim the belt. This doesn't happen going down hills or on straights. Only up moderate to steep inclines and at slower speeds where it's torqueing out. Even if the hill is a long one say - taking minutes to climb - it still only happens once and then I don't notice it again. I'm a big boy (240) and the hills in WV are a bit steep at times. but I've never had a minute's problem with this machine since 2002. Happens whether in 4wd/2wd/h or l. Any suggestions greatly apprreciated. Headed back down to WV in August for some riding. don't want to ruin a perfectly good machine without looking into this further.

My first guess is that your shift linage doesn't have the low range sliding gear in the right spot. Almost everyone has to adjust theirs.

My second guess is the camp damper (output shaft spring loaded thingy). Not a lot of people have this problem.

Another guess is the driveshaft is either loosing a ujoint or needs a lube. Everyone needs to remove their real arm and regrease their bearings and shaft once in a while, depends on water riding, but 1500miles is a number I pulled out of the air.

Thanks NYROC,

Do you have directions on the low range linkage adjustment on your website?

I do. The directions are overly explicit. You really just need to find the right spot for the linkage, so that the gear is shifted into the most positive way. That will reduce the noise in low range.

It should keep working. I will leave it on unless roadrunner kicks me off for excessive bandwidth useage. If that happens, I think italienmusky will host it for me.

The web service stops due to script errors once in a while. I will have to go look for script errors.
