Dial-A-Junk
#11
I know there are guys who swear by their Dial a crap, but I had the same experience with a sled, it was a waste of money.... 300 Canadian.
I actually siezed a piston with my D-a-Crap, sled got upside down (ya ya I know) and fuel got into one of the air tubes leaned out the jug and then squeak!

Yamihoo,
I'm at 100 feet above sea level.
To find out what size main jets that you are currently running, just remove the 8 carb screws (BUT DO SO VERY CAREFULLY so as not to strip these screws if they are the stock brass screws), and then unscrew the main jets. The size of each jet will be stamped on the side of the jet.
My feeling is that a lot of folks give up on the DAJs before they try the right jets to make it run right...and in my situation, that meant trying main jets that are 3 sizes smaller than stock.
Good luck and happy trails...

For those here that have had success with dial-a-jet...did you all go 3 sizes smaller on the main jets? Does everyone who buys these things have to experiment to find the right combination or is 3-sizes smaller the rule of thumb? Seems like the next best thing to fuel inection to me.

My dial-a-junk is working great. I purchased it because I ride in some extreme altitude changes. I go from 1.5k el. to 7+k el. and it works perfect. I'd rather be riding than messing with jetting everytime I go riding. If you're adding the D-A-Junk think about increasing your airflow first, before "jetting down". The instructions assume that you are leaving things the same (airbox/jetting) before the DAJ and after.

Zelphia,
I would say that going down 3 sizes is ONLY a general rule of thumb as everyone's jetting needs may be different depending on differences in altitude, temps, mods, etc. It just so happens that 3 sizes down worked perfectly for me. I also know of one other guy who recently had his Prairie (with DAJs) tuned at a Dyno (gas analyer) and that guy ended up going down 3 sizes on his main jets to get his DAJs working right. He also had his DAJ settings in the middle.
Predfan,
That is a good point. But for the record, I did install my DAJs at the same time that I added air to the A/F ratio by doing the Nyroc Mod to the stock pipe, adding a Napa Hose air snorkel and Twin Air filter. With these mods, I originally hoped that I would not have to mess with the main jets at all...but soon discovered that I was way too rich (with stock size main jets) after I did these mods. That's when I started going down on my main jets until I finally found that 3 sizes down is the best combo for my particular quad. Perhaps if I had an aftermarket pipe and drilled some holes in my air box lid, I would only have had to drop 1 or 2 sizes on my main jets...but who knows for sure?

a good point was made about the dial a junk that all should consider---it is just an added feature that can go wrong at any time and cause severe problems---if a piece of dirt lodges in it and blocks your fuel feed(pulling from bottom of carb bowl is place most likely to suck dirt from) while your racing your buddy on a long wide open stretch, at about 8500 rpm (4560 rpm on a 360 lol) and you suddenly go lean due to a blockage-------------LOOK OUT---------- 3 jet sizes is just to small for me to consider dropping down to---I am still awaiting larger jets I ordered from sudco, to rejet the old fashioned way---I bought the dial a junk because I didnt want to take a new carb apart---but guess what??? it was easier than I thought---BY THE WAY---WHERE CAN I PURCHASE ALLEN HEAD SCREWS TO REPLACE THE PHILLIPS HEADS IN MY FLOAT BOWL??? MINE ARE GETTING A LITTLE LOOSE FOR MY SCREWDRIVER????????????

Oleman,
I found those allen head screws at Lowes and Home Depot.
With respect to the possibility that something might go wrong with the DAJs while you are riding, I have 2 points that I'd like to make. First, there are no moving parts to the DAJs so there's nothing to wear out/break. The only possible problems would be getting some dirt blockage in your air snorkel lines or fuel lines). Second, (and most important), I have raced my (DAJ equipped) P650 in a local XC race during heavy downpours of rain on a course that included many deep water/mud spots. After 1 hour and 15 minutes of this abuse, my engine was still running while quite a few other quads in the race (many of which were sport quads) had taken on water in their motor and could not finish the race. While I did find water and mud stains on my Twin Air filter and on the 2 DAJ air snorkel filters, the effect was to make my engine run RICHER than normal (not leaner). You see, the water/mud that partially blocked some of the airflow going into the DAJs (and Carbs) meant that the A/F ratio now contained less air and more fuel. In fact, my motor showed some signs of running a little too rich during the race (it ocassionally stumbled/surged at high speeds), but never showed any signs of getting too hot. After the race, I cleaned the Twin Air filter and DAJ snorkel filters and my engine ran good again. For what its worth, my DAJ fuel and DAJ air snorkel lines appear to be clean of dirt/debrie after 2 months or so of use (including 2 muddy XC races).

So what happens if the DAJ snorkel filters rip or fall off? Will it suck dirt in the carbs? THose things just worry me. I've had my machine in water up to the airbox and see signs that water/mud got on them, can they suck in water if submerged? Or just choke?

Yamihoo,
While I'm not worried at all about those little DAJ filters potentially ripping or tearing off while riding...I do think you raise a legitimate point about using DAJs when GOING DEEP. I don't know exactly what would happen if the DAJ air snorkels were completely submerged under water...but it does appear that there is at least a possibility that you'd suck in water thru the little DAJ filters. Honestly if I was a serious mudder and/or went DEEP often, I would have serious reservations about using DAJs for this very reason. DAJs seem to fit my needs just fine (XC racing, trail riding, the occasional mud outing, etc.) and I think they are most useful for riding at different elevations like going to the mountains.
For those folks who may be a serious mudder and/or go DEEP into water often, I would highly suggest re-routing the end of the DAJ snorkels to be way up high and shielded from the elements. One popular suggestion is to place them inside the handlebars plastic.
As for me, I'm not a big mudder and rarely go into deep water anymore, so I keep mine routed to the bottom of the handlebars plastic (near the CVT intake)...this makes for easy access to frequently clean the little DAJ air filters.

Look's like i am a day late and a dollar short on this thread, but i just wanted to say i am the guy MikeyBoyesq was talkin about.... i finally got so fed up with jetting and rejetting and adjusting and takeing snorkles off and putting the snorkle back on and well you get the idea... i took it in to a performance shop called full throttle power sports in centerville utah. (Talked to chris) He hooked it to the dyno and wa la 3 sizes leaner on the jets. (120front 125rear.. 4200 feet above sea level) It runs like a raped ape!!! I have left it set on the middle daj setting, and haven't adjusted it yet.
For all you guys that have had bad luck with them or just plain think they stink.... that sucks and good luck with the tuning. Like i said before i almost shot my machine with a scatter gun full of buck shot, was either that or give up and pay someone else to do it. It was well worth the $$$.
Dyno is the way to go!! Worth there weight in gold imo.
