Primary spring for average P650 guy
#1
What I think the average P650 guy is a hard trailrider that doesn't see 50 mph much, but wants to get up there quick without shocking the drive train too much.
I have been confused on the forum as to what primary spring to get for that riding style.
Called EPI and talked to Krista....she says the pink spring on primary with the black spring on secondary. (Already had the black spring.) What that should result in is a primary spring pretty close to stock, but wheelie plus good acceleration in low and mid range. (Riding altitude not a factor unless putting in a clutch kit.)
I have never seen anyone come out and say 'get these two springs for this riding style', so am posting it for what it's worth.
I know some members have done a lot of work on spring testing....trying not to step on any toes.

Personally, I like the EPI black secondary and stock P700 primary spring for trail riding and XC racing. Everyone has their preference on the best the primary spring, but I personally don't like higher stall primary springs. That is why I like the P700 spring. I think the EPI Pink is supposed to be a no stall spring, so I'm sure its a good choice too. If you run oversized tires, I've heard that the Dalton Blue is a good choice. But in all honestly, I don't think any of these 3 primary springs will be substantially different if you are only going to use them for normal trail riding. If I were you, I'd just spend the $7.50 to buy the stock P700 primary spring and be done with it. I also recommend that you add the P700 belt whenever your current belt wears out.

KOD,
For the record, I recently tried the Dalton P/W spring and I found the higher engagement (stall) is not to my personal taste. If anyone wants to buy it from me for a reasonable price, just send me a PM.

LOL figured that one out didnt ya.
Actually the engagement for both stock springs were 1270 on my P650. The EPI Pink was 1520, Dalton Blue was 1630 and the Plain/White was 1750. For comparisons for anyone who has ever tried the EPI Red, the Red was 2150 rpms.
My idle was set to 1150 +/- 50. That should give some guys an idea of engagement.

KOD,
I know you did the Prim. Spring tests a long time ago (very good work!), but do you recall if you had 1 shim or NO shims in the primary clutch when you tested the engagement of these various springs? I'm pretty sure that the late 03 model P650's and the 04 P700's came stock with 1 shim in the primary spring whereas the 02 model P650's and early 03 model P650s came stock with NO shims. What about yours when you did the testing?
I only ask b/c I'm guessing the presence of a shim might have effected your rpm engagement numbers.

Mine never came with one of those and I didnt add one either.
But I know the spacer you are talking about. Dustin, a friend of mine has one in his 03 P650. I seen it when I installed the P/W spring for him.

What is the difference between the '02 P700 primary spring and the '02 P650 spring? Will I notice any performance difference on my machine which is bone stock?
If I'd install the P700 primary spring, is it suggested to install a shim too?

92LT,
The 02 and 03 P650 primary spring is the same. Last year, I installed the P700 prim. spring in my 03 P650 and did before/after timed runs at 100' and 300'. My tests showed practically identical acceleration times and the topspeed was the same with both springs. However, my seat of the pants feeling is that the P700 spring gives better mid-range acceleration. Unfortunately, I did not do any 20 to 50mph timed tests as this is probably the only way to know for sure if the P700 does in fact give better mid range than the P650 spring. As a result, I have kept the P700 spring in mine. If you add a shim, it will most likely raise the rpms about 100 rpms before the initial engagement of the clutch...I did that and I like it like that. Its a cheap mod (I paid $7.50 for the P700 spring and $2.50 for the shim).
